Press Release:

Jaguar Announces Launch of R Performance Academy

High Performance Driving Academy Allows Customers to Satisfy Their Need for Speed

MAHWAH, N.J., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ — For some, a day at the track driving the fastest Jaguar with some of the world’s most renowned driving instructors is a dream. For those lucky buyers of a 2010 Jaguar XKR or XFR, it will be a reality. Jaguar Cars announced today the launch of its R Performance Academy, beginning December 1, with a session at one of America’s premier racing facility, the Homestead Miami Speedway, which features 2.21 miles of challenging asphalt and 14 turns that provide a rewarding challenge to even the most experienced racers.

The R Performance Academy is complimentary with the purchase of a 2010 XFR, the ultimate Jaguar sports sedan, or 2010 XKR, the new generation of Jaguar’s sports coupe, and offers an exhilarating, experiential adventure for the ultimate auto enthusiast. Both the XFR and XKR are powered by a supercharged, 510-hp V8 engine, and boast accelerations from 0 – 60 in 4.7 and 4.6 seconds, respectively. The Academy is designed to help drivers explore the capabilities of these special automobiles and develop the skills and techniques needed to safely experience their high-performance dynamics.

“Our all-new R Performance Academy was specially developed to ensure that our customers can responsibly enjoy the full potential and incredible capabilities of the dynamic XFR and XKR,” said BJ Colaric, General Manager, Sales Operations for Jaguar Cars. “The security of having a world-class professional driving instructor by your side on an enclosed, high-speed track creates the perfect setting for both education and appreciation.”

The experience begins with a reception the night before the driving day where coaches will explain the program and share some of their racetrack experiences. The next day, guests arrive at the track bright and early for a driver orientation and a full day of driving in Jaguar R Performance Academy cars. The lessons learned on the racetrack are made relevant to everyday, real world driving by the instructors and will leave Jaguar owners more aware of their vehicles’ abilities and feeling more confident behind the wheel. This program features unique and exciting driving activities:

* maximum acceleration using various Jaguar Drive Control settings
* braking – and experiencing complete ABS stopping
* emergency lane changes
* Dynamic Mode and DSC Off mode handling
* cornering
* autocross (slalom course)
* full laps at speed with driving coach and hot laps with racing drivers

In 2010, the Academy will visit various tracks, including the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, New York and the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, among others, on a quarterly basis. Invitations to attend this unforgettable driving adventure were distributed nationwide to 2010 XKR and XFR customers who purchased a 2010 XFR or XKR through September.
Tata Motors owned Jaguar is planning to add an aggressively styled sports hatchback model to its vehicle lineup in the beginning of 2014. The model is inspired by the R-D6 Concept that was first seen at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Originally, when Jaguar was owned by Ford, top-level executives weren’t too supportive of putting the R-D6 Concept into production and felt that it was a total clash with the brand’s image. Under Tata, Jaguar is now gaining support at the highest levels of the company as it moves forward with a more independent future, reports AutoWeek.

“There’s a growing feeling with the R-D6 that we really had something very innovative, fresh and different. Maybe we missed something back then, but the idea is even more applicable now,” a source said.

Internally known as the R-D7, the model is expected to help Jaguar reduce its corporate average emissions and improve its fleet fuel-economy. Power is expected to come from a range of V6 gasoline and diesel engines, as well as 4-cylinder options for some markets.

Prices are expected to start around $60,000 when the Jaguar sports hatch enters production.

Tata Motors, owner of Jaguar and Land Rover, said that it has raised $750 million by issuing global depositary receipts and convertible bonds to pay down debt. The debt was taken on for its acquisition of loss-making Jaguar and Land Rover, which it bought from FoMoCo last year.

Tata had a consolidated debt of around 240 billion rupees ($5.2 billion USD) at end-June. It purchased Jaguar and Land Rover for $2.5 billion.

“It’s a very positive development for the company. But it all depends on whether it would be entirely used to reduce the debt,” Standard & Poor’s analyst Suzanne Smith told Reuters.

Tata said that the $750 million will be used to repay the debt for the two British brands and will go towards capital expenditure, working capital and corporate purposes.

Sources have told Inside Line that Jaguar is hard at work on a 5-door coupe that would compete with the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo. Internally known as the RD7, the model will be based on the XF platform and architecture and will have suicide-type rear doors and a side hinged tailgate.

Originally, Jaguar had also considered a three-door version but decided to go with the 5-door, which it thinks will sell in greater numbers.

Don’t expect to see the 5-door coupe anytime soon. Currently, Jaguar is working on a new sports car, known as the XE; meaning we won’t see this 5-door coupe model until sometime in 2011 or 2012.

Tata Motors said today that it will close one of the three Jaguar/Land Rover assembly plants in England by 2014 in an effort to move the two brands to profitability. Tata said that it will close either a factory in Castle Bromwich, which makes Jaguars, or its plant in Solihull, which makes Land Rovers.

The company said that the two sites are under review and has yet to decided which of the two plants it will close. A decision is due to be announced in the first half of 2010.

Both Jaguar and Land Rover, which Tata bought from FoMoCo last year, have been hit hard by the global economic downturn.

Tata said that it will consolidate the two central England factories, which are 8 miles apart, into one over the next 5 years.

Speaking to AutoCar at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Jaguar’s engineering boss Mick Mohan said that the company is planning a rival to the Audi A5 and the BMW 3-Series. He said that the much talked about XE sportscar is one of the several options being considered to replace the X-Type.

“The X-Type won’t be around forever, and because we don’t plan to replace it, there are lots of possibilities for cheaper models,” Mohan said. “Personally, I’d love to make a compact coupe – an Audi a5 or BMW 3-series coupe rival. I think we’d make a really good one too.”

He said that Jaguar will let the market soak up the XJ for the time being and will wait for the economy to recover before releasing another model. He said that Jaguar could plan something in about 12 months.

Mohan said that a crossover or an SUV are out of the question for Jaguar. ”Utility will never be what we’re about.”

A UK government spokesperson said today that Tata Motors has secured a 175 million pound ($289 million) private sector loan for Jaguar Land Rover and no longer needs financial support from Britain. The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has been holding talks with Tata and Jaguar Land Rover on guaranteeing both short and long-term funding, but talks stalled when Tata refused to accept tough conditions imposed by Britain in return for guaranteeing a loan.

“This additional funding will allow JLR to invest in future models and successfully launch the new XJ saloon on schedule and updated Land Rover models later this year,” Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said.

“The government had offered bridging finance from the automotive assistance programme if necessary. We understand the Tata group will now be successful in resolving longer term financial needs but we are willing to help again if necessary.”

In January Britain pledged to guarantee up to 2.3 billion pounds of loans.

Tata Motors, creator of the world’s cheapest car and owner of luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, reported a 58 percent rise in net profit, defying analyst forecasts for a halving of profit. The Indian automaker reported a net profit of 5.14 billion rupees ($107 million) in the quarter to June, from 3.26 billion rupees a year earlier. Revenues for Tata fell 8 percent to 64.05 billion rupees from 69.28 billion.

Tata sold 11 million shares of group company Tata Steel to parent Tata Sons, for 4.57 billion rupees in June.

“We are going ahead with their proposals and this is going to improve the cost reduction efforts in JLR,” Vice Chairman Ravi Kant told Reuters.

Nonetheless, Jaguar and Land Rover worries remain said Kant. Last month, Tata said that it may look for more way to cut costs at Jaguar and Land Rover including job cuts and plant closures.

Power for the 1952 Jaguar C-Type comes from a 3.4L twin-overhead-cam 6-cylinder making 160-hp allowing the car to reach top speeds of 120 mph.

It first came to New York on August 1, 1952 and was sold to its first owner, West Coast Jaguar dealer Charles Hornburg which delivered it to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for the final street race ever on the road racing circuit.

Only 52 units of the C-Types now exist worldwide.

Jaguar said today that it will cut 300 jobs at its Halewood plant in the north of England as it stops production of the X-Type sedan due sluggish demand in the auto industry. The X-Type, of which Jaguar has sold more than 350,000 units of in 8-years, had originally been scheduled to see production until mid-2010.

“Our industry has been especially badly hit by the recession and the premium sector more than others. Jaguar Land Rover’s retail sales fell by 28 percent in the past 10 months,” Chief Executive David Smith said in a statement. ”Ceasing production of the X-Type early, with further redundancies and temporary shutdowns at Halewood, is necessary to protect our other investment plans.”

Jaguar said that it will not close the Halewood plant but will shut it down temporarily for three weeks. The plant employs some 2,200 staff that are also responsible for the production of the Land Rover Freelander.

Jaguar is also in talks with the government for a loan guarantee of 340 million euro ($477.6 million) hand-out from the European Investment Bank. The loan was approved earlier this year.

Jaguar’s director of design Ian Callum has confirmed that his team is already working on a coupe version of the new 2010 XJ. Known as the XJ-C, Callum said that his design team is already sketching the model.

The original Jaguar XJ-C, of which only 8,378 units were built, was a pillarless model produced between 1975 and 1978. A concept XJ convertible was also built in 1996 to commemorate Daimler’s centenary. No word on whether Callum is designing a convertible version of the XJ.

According to Sky Motoring, the latest version of the XJ-C has yet to be signed-off, but we don’t doubt that the big bosses at Jaguar would have any objections with Callum’s design.

After all the waiting, teasers and image leaks, Jaguar has finally unveiled the 2010 Jaguar XJ today in London. Surprisingly, if you like the look of this car and if it fits your budge, you won’t have to wait until next year to make your purchase. The 2010 XJ will go on sale in December 2009 with prices starting at $72,500 (deliveries, however, will begin in early 2010).

The 2010 Jaguar XJ continues to build on the success of XK and XF. The new large sports sedan will be available in both standard and long wheelbase. The long wheelbase model offers a more spacious environment for rear-seat passengers with an extra five inches of legroom.

While the Europeans will get to enjoy the 3.0L V6 diesel, the stateside market will get three versions: a 385-hp 5.0L naturally aspirated V8, a 470-hp 5.0L supercharged V8 and a 510-hp 5.0L supercharged V8.

Prices will start at $72,500 for the XJ and $79,500 for the XJL with the naturally aspirated V8. The 470-hp 2010 XJ Supercharged and the XJL Supercharged will carry a price tag of 87,500 and $90,500, respectively. The top-of-the-line 5.0L XJ and XJL Supersport will start at a $112,000 and $115,000 MSRP, respectively.

Press Release:

REVEALED TODAY – THE ALL NEW 2010 JAGUAR XJ
The All New XJ brings a bold and daring new spirit to automotive luxury

MAHWAH, N.J., JULY 9, 2009 /PRNewswire/ – Jaguar proudly revealed the all new 2010 Jaguar XJ today in London. The iconic XJ offers a seductive mix of striking design and robust performance made possible by Jaguar’s aerospace-inspired light weight aluminum body technology. The all new Jaguar XJ will go on sale in December 2009, with a starting price of $72,500 MSRP. It is available to order today for delivery in early 2010.

Building on the success of the XK and XF, the new XJ is the third step in the revitalization of the Jaguar brand and redefines the world’s perception of a large sports sedan. The new XJ will be available in both standard and long wheelbase models. The long wheelbase offers an even more sumptuous and refined environment for rear-seat passengers with an additional five inches of legroom while the XJ’s trunk features power opening and closing for convenient access to the 15.2 cu. ft. storage space (with standard alloy space saver spare wheel).

The all new Jaguar XJ brings new standards of sustainability to the luxury vehicle segment. Its lightweight aluminum structure makes it at least 300 lbs. lighter over steel body construction, and is made with 50 percent recycled material allowing the XJ to minimize its carbon footprint and create a potential savings of three tons of CO2 per vehicle, compared to a body shell made entirely of new aluminum. These aerospace-inspired aluminum body technologies also provide benefits to performance, handling and fuel economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.

“The launch of the all new Jaguar XJ marks a major milestone for Jaguar in North America, which is expected to be the world’s largest Jaguar XJ market,” says Gary Temple, President of Jaguar Land Rover North America. “The debut of our ultimate four-door flagship follows recent recognition for exceptional dependability and clearly demonstrates our commitment to producing the finest cars in the world – fast, beautiful cars that offer luxury, performance and first-rate quality.”

The first impression of the all new XJ is its visual assertiveness. The XJ’s sleek lines are complemented by a taut waistline, which further accentuates the impression of length and elegance, and creates a natural tension as it fades from the front arch into the middle section of the car before reappearing as a strong haunch towards the rear.

The New XJ offers a modern reinterpretation of a number of key XJ design cues while maintaining the highest standards of personal luxury. This is evident in how the strong, muscular lower half of the car contrasts with the slim and graceful quality of the roofline – a nod to the original 1968 XJ sedan.

A standard panoramic glass roof is an integral part of the all new XJ’s design, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside. The LED light clusters wrap stylishly over the rear fenders, and feature three dramatic red vertical strips while the elongated teardrop shape of the side windows establishes the car’s silhouette. The rear of the all new XJ is notable for its pure, sculpted shape. With a conscious absence of ornamentation, the rear features only a single leaping Jaguar.

The face of the all new 2010 XJ is confident, with a wide front track and short overhang contributing to the finely judged proportions. The nose of the car follows Jaguar’s new design language with a bold and assertive treatment – the powerful mesh grille and slim xenon headlights create a strong road presence while the wrap-around rear screen reduces the visual weight of the pillars and gives the impression of an exotic “floating” roof.

“The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar,” says Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar Cars. “Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows; that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”

The sleek design and refined luxury is continued inside the all new XJ by mixing newly advanced technologies and contemporary design to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a car cabin. The overriding impression from the interior is a sense of personal space that is enhanced by the clean, simple form of the leather-wrapped instrument panel sitting low across the vehicle. At the center of the instrument panel is an analog clock with individual chrome chaplets, a spun metal face and iridescent blue background; a look inspired by luxury watches.

The all new XJ’s cabin is a marvel in its own right, blending elegant, contemporary design with the comfort, luxury and unmistakable sporting style of a Jaguar. Chrome and piano black detailing provide an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully crafted leather and veneer surfaces. To further complement the cabin design is a level of choice in colors, veneers and leathers not seen before in a Jaguar. Four specification levels – XJ, XJL, Supercharged and Supersport – allow the customer to tailor the car to suit their tastes. The top-of-the-range Supersport provides the ultimate expression of performance and luxury, with a specification that includes a leather headlining, semi-aniline leather seats and veneers with laser inlays.

Stunning, 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual InstrumentsTM complement an innovative 8-inch Touch-screen that displays vehicle functions ranging from audio and video to navigation and climate control. Premium surround sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins system, which is standard on the Supercharged and Supersport models. Advanced infotainment features also include hard drive-based audio and navigation systems, and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub.

The all new XJ’s beauty is much more than skin-deep. All engines transmit power through an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed electronically controlled, six-speed automatic transmission which has a fully-adaptive shift system that delivers extremely smooth gear changes and works to balance performance and economy.

With the XJ, Jaguar has built upon its leading quality performance using the latest virtual product technologies. These proven Jaguar dynamic technologies are taken to new levels in the all new XJ. Features such as air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics (continuously variable damping), Active Differential Control (on Supercharged and Supersport) and quick-ratio power steering deliver the blend of responsive, dynamic handling and a refined, supple ride expected from a Jaguar.

The new XJ will be available in the US with a choice of three engines – a 5.0 liter 385hp naturally aspirated V8, 5.0 liter 470hp supercharged V8 and a 5.0 liter 510hp supercharged V8. In naturally-aspirated form, the XJ develops 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The supercharged versions develop 424 lb.-ft. and 461 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively. All three engines combine deft performance, unparalleled character, peerless pedigree, and have a classic Jaguar blend of strength and precision.

The all new 2010 Jaguar XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s sleek and alluring appearance, combining responsive, sporting dynamics with the luxurious drive expected from a Jaguar.
