Teasing GT-R enthusiasts, Francois Bancon, Infiniti of Tokyo head of advanced planning, has recently mentioned the strong possibility of an Inifiniti model based on the Nissan GT-R platform.

“It’s too good a platform to use only on one model,” Bancon said. The GT-R based model would be a flagship sports car for the luxury brand.

He also adds that “We have three or four proposals we are looking at right now. Once we have launched the new smaller Infiniti (coming in 2015), the time would be right to have a flagship.”

It will be at least two years before we know Infiniti’s plans for sure, so if the brand does decide to move forward with the project, it would be at least another five years before production.

If Infiniti does need a halo car, is it right to mess with the 545hp V6 icon? In order to place its badge on the car, it would take some refinement over the sports car, which almost feels wrong. Part of what makes the GT-R iconic is that it is great in its own way, all by itself, boasting awesome horsepower and track-ready performance. On the other hand, Bancon could be right, is it simply a waste to use this platform on just one model? From a business standpoint this may be a good perspective, but as an enthusiast, the GT-R platform should be left alone.

After the unveiling of Infiniti’s new full-size crossover, the JX, word is that the Japanese BMW contender is betting big on potential sales for the JX, predicting that it will be a top seller for the brand.

“It will become our second-best-seller this year, right behind the G lineup,” said Infiniti’s North American vice president, Ben Poore.

Poore didn’t exactly disclose the brand’s sales predictions, but considering that Infiniti sold 58,246 G sedans and coupes total in 2011, it’s safe to assume that Infiniti’s target is somewhere north of that figure. Priced at just $41,400, Poore also added that the JX is “priced at the heart of the segment, where the growth is.”

“We want volume with this product,” he continued in an interview, “the JX is right on top, if not better value, than the Acura MDX and Lexus RX.”

In the same interview, Poore also gave some tips about Infiniti’s future lineup. One of the rumored models is the brand’s compact luxury hatchback that is supposed to be based on the Etherea concept, which was unveiled at last year’s Geneva Auto Show. The hatchback is supposed to be powered by four-cylinder engines supplied by Mercedes-Benz and could see a launch date around 2014.

Also included in Poore’s comments were hints of Infiniti’s much anticipated and rumored range-extended electric super car. However, he didn’t specify exact details about it. Either way, it sounds like Infiniti is gearing up to jump into the supercar game after Lexus introduced their LF-A and Acura debuted their NSX concept.

In Sept. 2011, the new 360-hp Infiniti M Hybrid set the Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest hybrid by running the standing quarter mile in 13.9031 seconds. Infiniti is now banking on that move with a new commercial released yesterday called ‘The Duel.’

The commercial shows the Infiniti M35h Hybrid going head-to-head with the 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

“‘The Duel’ is an exciting way to remind everyone that the Infiniti M Hybrid is the world’s fastest accelerating full-hybrid with 360 horsepower and 32 miles per gallon,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. “At Infiniti, we believe that luxury should always thrill and inspire.”

Refresher: The Infiniti M35 Hybrid will be powered by a single electric-motor/twin-clutch arrangement, mated to a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6. Together the system makes 360-hp. The first-clutch is installed between the V6 engine and the electric motor, which Infiniti says allows for a more responsive drive. Infiniti said that the M35 Hybrid, which will carry a lithium-ion battery pack, has the ability to run solely on electric-power under certain driving conditions. 0 to 62 mph comes in 5.5 seconds with an EPA-rated fuel-economy of 27/32 mpg (city/highway).

For those of us iPhone users, we all appreciate the brilliant engineering that has come from Apple over in Pasadena, California in the world with iPhones. But we all dread the inevitable wear and tear that could be found on iPhones after being used…and dropped. And Nissan feels the pain, which is why they just introduced their own Scratch Shield iPhone case featuring the brand’s “self-healing paint finish.”

Beginning with Nissan’s paint technology, the brand has been employing their special paint jobs since 2005 on various Nissan and Infiniti models. Developed in conjunction with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc., the paint’s special ingredient is polyrotaxane. The beauty of that toxic sounding chemical is that when damage happens to the paint in the form of say, a fine scratch, the chemical structure of the paint “reacts” to the scratch and morphs its original shape to fill the gap, essentially “healing the blemish.”

“We like to think laterally by taking the great innovations we’ve got from an automotive point of view, and looking at how they could be applied to improve everyday issues,” said Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director in Business Development for Nissan in Europe. “The Scratch Shield iPhone case is a great example of us taking a Nissan automotive technology that has had a huge impact for our customers, and then shifting the boundaries to apply it to another everyday product.”

Nissan’s iPhone case is made of a combination of ABS and a tactile gel-like material to provide a more scratch-resistant surface and for better grip. The case is compatible with both iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models. Product release details were not disclosed.

Low emissions and high performance, that’s the name of the game for Infiniti at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The comany today released another teaser of its lightweight sports car concept that it says will be the first model to not only have a range-extender but also a mid-ship package for optimal weight distribution and crisp handling.

“Infiniti already enjoys a lead in high performance, low emission technologies with its Infiniti M Hybrid,” the company said in a statement. “But the purpose of the Geneva concept is to explore what might be the next stage in how to deliver a vivid, engaging and sophisticated driving experience from an electrically-propelled vehicle. The mid-ship mechanical layout could be a vital ingredient.”

More details on the Infiniti range-extender sports car concept will be revealed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Volvo has already teased its upcoming BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 competitor. But it seems like another automaker is planning to compete in the segment – Infiniti. Reports suggest that Infiniti’s compact sports car will hit the markets sometime in 2014.

Insiders say that Infiniti will sign off on the design of the car as early as next month. Besides the Infiniti Etherea Concept, there are two other design concepts being looked at.

Now word on whether the Etherea name will be carried over to the production model but insiders suggest that the Japanese automaker is looking at a hybrid powertrain. While that may upset many, don’t forget what Infiniti has done with the M35h Hybrid.

The model could be based on a front-wheel-drive platform that will be provided by Mercedes-Benz – the same platform that will underpin the upcoming A-Class.

Because of the sources readily available from the German side, the two said that the compact hatchback would most likely be based on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class platform, which also underpins the B-Class. Both are front-wheel drive.

Powertrains are still being worked out, which include the traditional diesel and gasoline motors. And thanks to the Japanese side of the partnership, it’s possible to ponder about either a hybrid or full-electric powertrain as well, if not both.

Some of you may be thinking, well, because Infiniti is owned by Nissan, who is also owned by Renault, doesn’t the luxury brand have plenty of front-wheel drive platforms to choose from in the parts bin? As Nissan’s Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said:

“There are very few mass brands that make that walk into luxury. And there’s a reason for that, which is embedded somewhere within the way the products are executed and in the engineering. A luxury brand will need much better torsional rigidity, much better NVH than you would put into a mass brand. If you have a product that handles like an A-class or a B-class, with that level of NVH, with that level of torsional rigidity, but you can do it at a cost, which is closer to where a mass brand would be, then you’re in a very good place from a competitive point of view. And that’s where we’re trying to be.”

Infiniti’s BMW 3-Series competitor, the G37 has continued to prove itself as a worthy competitor the German standard. And to give the G37 a closer edge towards BMW’s M-Division, the brand has just introduced their “Infiniti Performance Line” G37 Convertible here today at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The 2013 Infiniti JX made its production debut today at the 2011 LA Auto Show. The 7-passenger / 3-row luxury crossover will go on sale in spring 2012 and will attempt to grab a piece of the full-size crossover/suv market from the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade and the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class  - and it might just do really well.

“The all-new Infiniti JX embraces family customers in a way no luxury crossover has done before – recognizing their need to grow up, but without growing old,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. “Responsibility should come as a reward, rather than as a restriction on the things and activities you enjoyed as a single person or a couple.”

Infiniti says that the 2013 JX offers segment leading overall passenger volume, segment leading rear cargo room, more 2nd and 3rd row legroom than the Escalade, access to 3rd row without removing a 2nd row child seat and a bunch of technology features including the Infiniti Connection with Google Calendar, Drive Zone/Speed Alert and Infiniti Personal Assistant and its great Around View Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection.

Nissan’s luxury brand, Infiniti, originally started selling vehicles in North America in 1989. The brand’s operations have since then grown to include the United Kingdom, Middle East, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine and China.

However, due to increasing demand in China, Infiniti is now moving its global headquarters to Hong Kong. The move comes as Infiniti seeks to lift total global sales to 500,000 vehicles on an annual basis, as part of Nissan’s 6-year mid-term business plan, Nissan Power 88.

“As Infiniti grows its presence in the global luxury markets of North America, Europe, China and South East Asia, we selected Hong Kong as the optimum location for our new global Infiniti headquarters,” said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “We see an opportunity to reinforce Asian hospitality within the Infiniti brand, distinct from both Nissan and our facing luxury competitors. We are proud to be the only automaker that will call Hong Kong home,” he added.

Co-located with the Infiniti headquarters, Nissan’s new corporate facility in Hong Kong will kick-off operations in April 2012.

Nissan’s Executive Vice President Andy Palmer has confirmed that the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition will go into production. The announcement was made during a video interview for the company’s blog.

“First of all, doing the Sebastian Vettel Version was fun. It was fun for Sebastian, it was fun for Shiro Nakamura and actually it’s a really interesting car,” said Palmer. “But it’s also a kind of pilot for IPL, Infiniti Performance Line. It’s about being able to do our equivalent of AMG or M-series and we wanted to test the organization and can the organization cope we’ve these type of special versions.”

Palmer says that the relationship between Vettel and Infiniti will go on to shape the company’s IPL division. The IPL division will compete with BMW’s M lineup and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG.

“This is one of the first versions that will go to market. Not as an IPL—it’ll obviously go as the Sebastian Vettel special version, but it demonstrates we’re able to do these low volume, very special versions and be able to charge a premium for that kind of work. Again, hopefully, with Sebastian now the world champion, the demand for his special version is going to be that much higher.”

The California Air Resources Board maintains a very strict approach to its emissions control and has therefore set the standard throughout the country. Sillen is the first to meet those standards, as well.

This kit features a Vortech V-3 Centrifugal Supercharger unit, complete system with a vorteh V-.3 Centrifugal Super Charger Unit, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.

On the 370Z, the Stillen kit takes the 332-hp stock V6 and turns out over 500-hp from it.
