When releasing a convertible version of a luxury-performance coupe, there is much risk that the aesthetics of the car will suffer. This crisis was averted however, by the Infiniti design team with regards to the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible. From certain angles, the convertible looks better than its sibling, the coupe.

The three-piece power retractable roof provides for an extremely stylish and sharp looking vehicle with roof either up or down. “This new G has dual beauty – it looks as good with the top up or down – along with a beautiful, leather-appointed interior that is meant to be experienced wide-open,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing at Nissan.

The G37 Convertible is Infiniti’s answer to the BMW 3-Series Convertible and the Lexus IS-C. How does it compete? Let’s take a look:

2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible:

Base Price: $43,850.
Price as Tested: $51,865.
Engine: 3.7L DOHC 24-valve VVEL V6 – 325-hp/267 lb-ft of torque.
Transmission: 7-speed automatic with Drive Sport and Manual Shift mode.
Curb Weight: 3,642 lbs.
0 to 60 mph: 5.3 seconds.
Fuel-Economy: 17/25 mpg (city/highway).

Exterior:

We were not impressed by the styling of the Lexus IS-C. When compared to the BMW 3-Series Convertible however, the G37 Convertible stands up fairly strong. Both cars are hard top convertibles and offer sleek drop-top designs.

With the top up, the G37 Convertible is not very discernible from the Coupe. With the top down however, the Coupe barely stands in comparison to the Convertible. The roof retracts in about 30 seconds with the simple push of a button located just below the gearbox. We did however, have one gripe with the retraction process; instead of a simple one-touch button, the motor requires the driver to hold the button down throughout the entire retraction process.

Infiniti’s Scratch Shield paint, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, dual chrome tip exhaust, chrome front-grille, LED taillights, and HID bi-functional head-lamps all come standard on the G37 Convertible. Our test car came equipped with a $1,350 optional Sports Package which upgrades the 18-inch wheels to 19-inch ones and adds W-rated performance tires, sports tuned steering, sport brakes, and aluminum pedals. Our test-model was also equipped with optional illuminated kick plates, available for $300.

Interior:

The interior does not sway much from that of the Coupe, save for the optional Bose Open Air Sound System designed to dynamically change the equalization settings based on outside noise coming into the car. The system offers great sound quality via its 13 speakers, two of which are embedded into the driver and front-passenger headrests.

When compared to the 3-Series Convertible and the IS Convertible, the G37 Convertible Coupe takes best-in-class, hands down. Interior features that come standard on the G37 Convertible include:

8-way power heated front leather seats with adjustable lumbar support

Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition

Adaptive Climate Control System

Rear-seat heater ducts under front seats

Power windows with one-touch auto-up/down Remote power door locks with auto-locking feature

Illuminated entry system with delayed fade-out

Dual front cup holders and door bottle holders

Front and rear carpeted floor mats

6-speaker audio system with AM/FM, AUX audio jacks, in-dash 6-disc CD changer with MP3 playback capability and XM Satellite Radio.

Infiniti Controller with 7-inch color display for audio, fuel economy, maintenance and comfort and convenience systems. It also acts as a display for the Rear View Camera.

The $3,250 Premium Package adds:

Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System.

The Bose Open Air Sound System featuring noise adaptive technology with 13 speakers, including Bose front seat personal speakers with iPod connectivity

Advanced Climate Control System with the cleaner Plasmacluster air purifier.

Memory system for driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors.

2-way power lumbar support for driver’s seat.

Cooled-seats.

Auto-dimming rear view mirror with HomeLink® Universal Transceiver.

Rain-sensing wipers.

The Navigation Package, which runs $1,850 and is available with or without the Premium Package will get you:

Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with Lane Guidance and 3-D building graphics

XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic information

9.3GB Music Box hard drive with CompactFlash slot

Infiniti Voice Recognition for climate control, audio and navigation systems

Infifniti also offers for the G37 Convertible, the Technology Package, which is available without the Navigation Package, but (ridiculously enough) not without the Premium Package. This package adds:

Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking

Adaptive Front lighting System

Pre-Crash Seat Belts

The only real complaint we have concerning the interior of this car is the structure of the options package. It is a bit ridiculous that the the most expensive options package is a prerequisite for the least expensive. Aside from that, the power seat switches are a little hard to access without the door closed.

Performance:

Dropping the top of the ‘09 G37 Convertible really enables the driver to experience the sounds put out by the 325-hp, 3.7L V6 engine that puts out a maximum torque of 267 lb-ft. Either the 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic will see this car through to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. That’s .2 seconds faster than the BMW 335i Convertible and a full half-second faster than the Lexus IS-C.

As is generally an issue with any hardtop convertible, the weight of the 457 pound folding steel top compromises handling in spite of the revised rear-suspension. Structural rigidity is also compromised – another common issue with convertibles – with the top down, and this makes for a very noticeable (though not terrible) rattle when driving with the top down.

Overall:

One thing is certain; the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible is one good looking topless vehicle, compared to the competition.

Given the starting price $43,850 (before the $865 Destination and Handling fees) the G37 Convertible is a car definitely worth checking out. This is the best price in class as the BMW 335i starts at $50,700, and the Lexus IS-C starts slightly above the Infiniti at $44,390.

We’re pretty sure there have been times where you’ve been driving down the highway with your friends and one of them looks at you and goes “Did you just let one go?” You quickly reach for the air recirculation button and say “No man, that was from outside, that truck in front of me just let one go.”

Well, you can now avoid that awkward situation thanks to Infiniti’s new Forest Air, a new climate control system that emulates the air of the natural environment.

Here’s how it works:

The system avoids the air-conditioned artificiality of simple climate control set-ups by adding gentle breezes and optimizing humidity. All this is delivered at the temperature of the occupants’ choice, while greatly reducing the possibility of unpleasant odors or pollen entering the cabin.

The new technology will be available in the 2011 Infiniti M, which is scheduled to hit dealerships in spring 2010.

Press Release:

Infiniti Creates a “Forest Retreat” In The Urban Jungle
– All-New 2011 Infiniti M to Offer Innovative Forest Air System –

Infiniti is making driving in the urban jungle a little more tolerable – with a breath of fresh air. The all-new 2011 Infiniti M, which is scheduled to arrive at Infiniti retailers beginning in spring 2010, will be equipped with a newly-developed climate control system that emulates the air of the natural environment.

Infiniti looked to the forest for inspiration. The automaker believes most people rank forest air as the cleanest and most refreshing. As such, it’s ideal atmosphere to emulate on promoting an overall feeling of wellness in a car’s interior, as well as helping keep the driver alert.

Appropriately called Forest Air, the system avoids the air-conditioned artificiality of simple climate control set-ups by adding gentle breezes and optimizing humidity. All this is delivered at the temperature of the occupants’ choice, while greatly reducing the possibility of unpleasant odors or pollen entering the cabin.

The result is Infiniti’s most sophisticated climate control system yet and one that the engineers who developed it believe is class-leading in many ways. The system offers exceptionally clean and refreshing air quality in nearly all driving situations.

Forest Air System is an umbrella term for several areas of technology, some new and some, such as the Plasmacluster* air purifier, building on proven Infiniti innovations.

Instead of blasting air into occupants’ faces, the new M delivers a gentle breeze. Air from the instrument panel vents is modulated so it feels far more natural, making the whole cabin environment a more pleasant place to be.

Humidity control plays a part in the Infiniti M’s always-fresh interior. Air-conditioners are good at taking all the humidity out, making interior air very dry. Forest Air System leaves a comfortable amount of moisture in the air, avoiding the dried-out feeling but without allowing the windows to fog up. The very precise humidity monitoring needed to achieve this is provided by exterior and interior sensors mounted at the top of the windshield.

For all this to work depends on a first line of defense in keeping bad air out, and the 2011 Infiniti M will have it. Again the system relies heavily on sensors – not just to close the air intake when an odor outside is detected, but also to neutralize bad air already inside, such as tobacco smoke. Active control like this results in as oxygen-rich an interior as possible with low CO2 levels.

Allergens are effectively kept out of the cabin by a new filter in the air-conditioning system. The filter’s fibers are impregnated with natural grape-seed polyphenol that brings a remarkable rise in efficiency. The effect of cedar pollen allergens, for example, is cut by 88 per cent compared to a regular filter.

Another ingredient in the Forest Air System is Infiniti’s Plasmacluster air purifier. Now more powerful and sensitive than ever, its stream of high-density ions is able to decompose the smells that cling to interior trim, down to barely-detectable levels. Apart from this improved deodorizing function, the Plasmacluster is more effective now at inactivating bacteria, mold, viruses and allergens.

With the Forest Air System, the all-new 2011 Infiniti M will demonstrate what Infiniti has always believed: that quality of air is a key factor in helping keep the driver stress-free and alert, and passengers comfortable and relaxed.

Speaking to the press at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., announced that Infiniti plans to introduce an electric vehicle – one that will be true to the Infiniti brand’s promise of “Inspired Performance.”

He said that a concept is being developed “for a stylish, compact, high performance four-seat luxury Infiniti with zero emissions.”

It was reported yesterday that Infiniti is working on a new entry-level model that would compete with the likes of the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series. An electric-version of that model is expected to debut around 2012.

“With the addition of a high-performance V6 diesel to Infiniti’s Western Europe line in 2010, and the Infiniti M Hybrid, which will be available in the U.S. in the spring of 2011, Infiniti will soon offer an almost unrivalled choice of powertrains compared with other luxury brands,” Ghosn said.

However, Takashi Nakajima, director of exploratory design for Nissan, said that the model is still five to 10 years away from becoming a reality.

According to AutoExpress, before we see any one-seater Infiniti electric-car, the Nissan owned luxury brand will offer a competitor to the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series – and it will be electric. Sources said that Nissan is planning a new luxury compact hatchback entry-level model that will compete with 1-Series, A3 and the production version of the Lexus LF-Ch.

AutoExpress says that we can expect to see the electric car, along with its conventional gasoline powered engined versions, in 2012.

At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan will show its new Land Glider Concept, one of the most unusual concepts the Japanese automaker has ever produced, but Nissan is very serious about it.

The Nissan Land Glider is about 43 inches wide and the wheels and fenders tilt about 17 degrees when cornering, allowing the car to lean as it goes around curves in the roads.

“This is our second phase of electric-vehicle design,” said Takashi Nakajima, director of exploratory design for Nissan.

Insiders say that Nissan is dead serious about putting the concept into production for the Infiniti brand for global markets, including the United States, reports Automotive News.

Nonetheless, don’t expect to see the one-seater electric Infiniti on the roads anytime soon. Nakajima said that his exploratory design is intended to look five to 10 years into the future at emerging market trends.

Pat (in e-mail) How many miles per gallon are you getting and how is the handling?

We are averaging 18.5 mpg and handling so far is very impressive. Taking turns at high-speeds makes you feel very confident.

gigan: Compared to this, I can see how people think Acuras have too many buttons. However, I wonder if it is bc Acura has more toys to play w/?

The Infiniti G37 S Convertible has a lot of toys to play with as well; although it’s very simple to navigate around the technological features offered unlike Audi’s confusing MMI system.

Bob: During your “test drive” can you try to flex the body on the G37. I am curious is the cobvertible will have any rattles or sqeaks as the car is brought over bumps. Please try to find a ramp such as a up or down ramp going into a hotel or shopping center. Slowly approach allow one front wheel to drop low / or higher while the rest of the car is level then slowly take the ramp see if there is any flexing creak or squeals coming from the hardtop. You can also do this with some driveways that go downhill then drop to the street.

I had a 2005 G35x that I named “RattleRocket” after the first two years. Everything rattled and sqeaked on that car. I now have an 2008 G37 which is a huge improvment in interior quality and rattles and squeaks. I am considering a 2010 G37 Convertible or another G37 coupe in the spring and I am curious if that hardtop will be quiet enough for me. Trust me I will take the car on a long test drive myself, but this is stuff that you should be looking for in a car.

Second question is how is the 7-speed ? My 2008 has the 5-speed and the car now only has 15,000 miles and sometimes I swear the damn thing slips and sometimes I feel a bit feedback not when changing gears but simply accelerating in gear. Still the G37 rules over any other car that is why I still purchased a second one after my first “RattleRocket”. Hopefully Infiniti is continuously improving quality and I will be a third time return buyer.

“RattleRocket” – very creative. Indeed we have noticed that in previous Infiniti ‘G’ cars we’ve driven. However, that noise is minimized in the convertible. Nonetheless, it is still there. In terms of interior noise, the G37 Convertible is fairly quiet – very quiet when compared to other hard-top convertibles we’ve driven.

The 7-speed automatic transmission – well I hate it. It denies you downshifts and even upshifts. I would rather get a car like this in a manual-transmission but our test-car happens to be a 7-speed automatic and it’s very annoying. However, it does shift pretty fast.

The chilly weather has been fairly forgiving this week as we test-drive our 2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible. Today we’re going to give you a little tour around the inside of the new Infiniti G37 drop-top.

“This new G has dual beauty – it looks as good with the top up or down – along with a beautiful, leather-appointed interior that is meant to be experienced wide-open,” says Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing – and we definitely have to agree.

The interior is very comfortable and controls are very ergonomically placed. We know we say that about a lot of cars but Infiniti definitely focused their attention on keeping the controls very driver oriented. One thing we didn’t like are the seat-adjusting controls; you basically have to keep the door open to be able to toggle around to adjust your seats to your liking. With the door-closed it’s nearly impossible to mess around with the seat settings.

The $3,050 Premium Package gets you Bluetooth, a Bose sound system with 13-speakers, memory seats, iPod connectivity, advanced climate control, a power-tilt telescopic steering column and automatic dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink. Opt for the $1,850 Navigation Package and you can enjoy Infiniti’s Hard Drive Navigation System with 7-inch color touch-screen, XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic information, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive with a CompactFlash slot and Infiniti’s Voice Recognition for climate control, audio and navigation. The $1,150 Technology Package adds Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking, Adaptive Front lighting System and Pre-Crash Seat Belts.

We have the Infiniti G37 Convertible until next week so ask us all the questions you’d like and we’ll get them answered for you.
Infiniti confirmed today that it will offer its first production hybrid ever in its 20-years of existence with the 2012 Infiniti M35 Hybrid. The model will join the Infiniti M lineup in spring 2011.

Infiniti said that its hybrid system consists of a single electric-motor/twin-clutch arrangement, mated to a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6. The first-clutch is installed between the V6 engine and the electric motor, which Infiniti says allows for a more responsive drive. Infiniti said that the M35 Hybrid, which will carry a lithium-ion battery pack, has the ability to run solely on electric-power under certain driving conditions.

Additional technical details will be announced closer to launch.

The 328-hp 2011 Infiniti M37 and the 400-hp 2011 Infiniti M56 will go on sale in the U.S. in spring 2010.

Press Release:

Infiniti Confirms M35 Hybrid Production

Infiniti today confirmed that its first production hybrid vehicle will be part of the recently announced line of 2011 Infiniti M luxury performance sedans, which are scheduled to go on sale in spring 2010 at Infiniti dealers nationwide. The Infiniti M35 hybrid is expected to arrive about 12 months later as a 2012 model. It is Infiniti’s first hybrid in its 20-year existence, as well as the cleanest and most economical car in Infiniti’s history.

Realizing the high performance/low emissions promise of the recent Infiniti Essence concept car, the M35 Hybrid has been designed and engineered to add to, not take away from, the driving experience, a key part of any Infiniti’s appeal. The M35 Hybrid is based on the all-new M, which itself picks up styling cues from Essence, the show-stopper that made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show early in 2009.

The M35 Hybrid maintains a high performance luxury sedan profile, overlaying it with the fuel economy and CO2 emissions of a smaller car, while delivering driving flair to please any enthusiast – complete with charismatic V6 and rear-wheel drive handling.

Infiniti’s hybrid system, developed solely within Infiniti’s parent group, is a single electric motor/twin clutch arrangement. Innovatively, the first clutch is installed between the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 and the electric motor. The result of this configuration, where all components act on a single prop shaft to the rear differential, is a consistent driving feel under all conditions with linear performance and the “direct responses” that the engineers sought.

The electric motor acts as both propulsion unit, boosting the V6 in “power assist” mode when maximum acceleration is required, and also as a generator. Along with charging the battery in the normal way, the motor recovers energy otherwise lost during deceleration and braking.

The M Hybrid can also run solely on its electric motor in certain driving conditions, furthering fuel efficiency and optimizing energy usage across the widest possible range of driving conditions. Details of driving range, performance and transmission will be released later.

As expected of Infiniti, several new technologies are introduced in the new M35 Hybrid, including a “laminated” lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack that is the same size as conventional batteries but offers twice the power. Lamination enhances the pack’s cooling performance, while temperature stability is further improved by the use of manganese positive electrodes. An end result of this is exceptional battery reliability.

The M35 Hybrid joins conventional engine-equipped 2011 M versions – including a new high-performance diesel V6 for Western Europe – as the first Ms to be sold across all of Infiniti’s world markets, currently 33 countries. All of the new-generation Infiniti M models are on target to beat their predecessors on fuel consumption and emissions – despite across-the-board performance improvements – thanks to a range of efficiency-enhancing measures.

Yes, we know it’s purple; and yes, we know it’s an automatic – but it’s still beautiful. Joining the 2010 GMC Terrain this week in our Weekly-Test Drive is the new 2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible.

First Impressions: It is one of the most beautiful coupes we’ve seen converted into a convertible. The 2009 G37 Convertible is Infiniti’s direct answer to BMW’s 3-Series Convertible and Lexus’s new IS-C. The hard-top convertible has definitely turned a lot of heads since we picked it up earlier today, especially from the ladies. Of course, that most likely does not mean you will attract girls with a purple convertible; more like girls are attracted to your purple G37 Convertible and can see themselves driving one. The interior is the same exact way you see it on the G37 Coupe, which is ergonomically designed with quality materials. We love the Bose speakers placed in the head rests – but most of all, we love pushing the 3.7L V6 that pumps out 325-hp with a maximum torque of 267 lb-ft. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic with a manual shift mode with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. 0 to 60 mph comes in a whopping 5.3 seconds.

Pricing for the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible starts at $43,850.

As always, stay in touch as we review the car and ask us all the questions you want about the G37 S Convertible. If you want a quicker response send us a Tweet and we’ll reply ASAP.

On a side note – let us know if you think the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible looks better than the BMW 3-Series Convertible or the Lexus IS-C Convertible. Cast your vote in the poll below.

Infiniti has already opened the doors to its first British dealership in Reading, ahead of the brand’s launch in the UK later this year. The Nissan luxury brand today announced it has partnered with a second company for its UK dealership network, which will increase the number of Infiniti showrooms to at least 13.

Infiniti, unlike its rivals in Europe, has focused on luxury and “total ownership experience” – meaning all showrooms have been designed to have more in common with exclusive hotels rather than a traditional car dealership.

It’s latest partnership with Mana Premier Automobiles will allow the company to open dealerships in south London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Leeds and Stockport. Five other locations will be announced later this year.

Nissan announced today that it has produced the first engine that will be shipped to Japan for assembly of the next-generation Infiniti QX56 full-size SUV. The move marks the first time a Nissan plant in the United States has exported an engine to Japan.

Nissan plans to export U.S. made 5.6L V8 engines and engine parts to Japan to install in the 2011 Infiniti QX56 that will be shipped back to U.S. dealerships.

Apparently, the round-trip is quicker and more cost-efficient than tooling up an engine plant in Japan for the SUVs.

The Infiniti QX56 has been produced at Nissan’s Canton, Miss., until now. Nissan is now moving production of the low-volume luxury SUV to an assembly plant at Shatai Kyushu, Japan.
