Today, Hyundai Motors introduced their first direct-injection gasoline powered engine. According to Hyundai, the 2.4-liter engine, dubbed the Theta II, delivers more power while improving fuel-efficiency by 10%, reports Automotive News.

The new engine, set to debut in the redesigned Hyndai Sonata early next year, took four years and $147.4 million to develop. The Korean automaker plans to eventually introduce direct-injection technology across its entire line gas powered engines.

Hyundai reports that when compared to conventional engines of equal size, the Theta II delivers 7% more torque at low revolutions and 12% more at higher revolutions. Gas mileage is also increased by about 10% over conventional engines.

The engine will debut in the redesigned 2010 Hyundai Sonata sedan, due in U.S. dealerships early next year.

Japanese automakers are weary as they keep a watchful eye on Hyundai Motors and its affiliate Kia Motors. The two companies combine to make the world’s fourth largest automaker by sales and despite this economy we are in, they are making money hand over fist.

The Japanese are worried because as Reuters reports, “South Korea last month inked a tentative trade pact with the European Union to add to list of more than 40 free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries ranging from the United States to India. Japan has less than a third as many, almost all of them with the rest of Asia.”

To make matters worse for the Japanese companies, the government seems none-too-concerned about the yen’s rise against the dollar and is promoting a platform based on an increase of domestic demand. The automakers are worried about the value of the yen and pine for the government to ensure that the auto industry, which drives the national economy, remains competitive.

Ingenious marketing and government measures to encourage the purchases of fuel-efficient vehicles have allowed Hyundai to gain strong market-share. Aside from their increased share, the company has also defied industry-standard profit margins; For the period July-September Hyndai posted a net profit of $847 million. Honda and Toyota combined for earnings of the same amount for the same period.

Many industry insiders however believe that Hyunda/Kia has just been the beneficiary of fortunate circumstance, and that these numbers will not last as the Japanese have more flexibility in their production and more experience in the business than do the Koreans.

Like many companies, Hyundai motors has taken to social media as a means of marketing and maintaining brand awareness. Unfortunately for the however, the Twitter user name ‘Hyundai’ had already been taken before the Korean automaker even thought about social media. “Twitter’s @Hyundai page contains a collection of 140-character blasts in English and Korean about oysters, cell phones and the Yankees.”, reported Automotive News. “Clicking on a profile photo reveals a collage of scantily-clad ladies bearing cleavage and more, and a caption saying, “Have a Lustful Day.’”

Despite several attempts by Hyundai, Twitter refuses to get involved and Hyundai is now contemplating legal action. “They simply haven’t responded to requests,” said Chris Hosford, a spokesman for Hyundai Motor America told Automotive News. “Our brand name is extremely important to us. … We’re very disappointed that Twitter has shown no interest in protecting brand names.”

Currently, Twitter offers no special service such as ‘verified account’ status to businesses as it does to celebrities, and this frustrates professional marketers to no end. This situation with Hyundai is not unusual; many of the top 100 advertisers, as ranked by Advertising Age, do not own the Twitter usernames that correspond to their products and brands. Among those being squatted on are: General Motors Co., General Electric, Comcast, Eli Lilly, Kellog Co., MasterCard, Nestle, and Walt Disney.

Twitter has acknowledged, and expressed concern for, those marketers experiencing frustration on the brand verification issue, and has hinted heavily that a ‘Twitter Pro’ is coming soon, anticipating social-media as becoming a crucial part of any relevant company’s brand presence.

“Now finance or lease any new Hyundai, and if you lose your income in the next year, you can return it with no impact on your credit.”- That was the voice over for Hyundai’s commercial during last year’s Superbowl. The company also ran nine ads during the Academy Awards to launch the Genesis. Ads like these during a time when every big advertiser was trying to avert the minds of consumers away from the recession, are the reason that Hyundai was named AdAge’s 2009 Marketer of the Year.

“Engaging with both the broken dreams and the intact ones through high-profile ad buys that garnered plenty of positive press was in sharp contrast to the tail-between-the-legs mode of Hyundai’s rivals, many of whom had slashed budgets and retreated into retail-focused advertising.” wrote AdAge’s Jean Halliday.

Hyundai is definitely going through a re-imaging phase, as they managed to post a 27% increase in new car sales after cash-for-clunkers ended while the industry as a whole saw a decrease of 22%. “these same people [that] never would have been caught dead in a Hyundai” might have worried about what their neighbors would think, Scott Fink, chairman of Hyundai’s national dealer council told AdAge. “Now people are very comfortable because the brand has been elevated. We used to be a price player, but now we’re a mainstream player.”

Hyundai executives attribute much of their success amidst the recession to their ‘Hyundai Assurance’ program; the program mentioned in last year’s Superbowl voice-over, and its progeny, ‘Assurance Gas Lock’, which guaranteed summer buyers a fixed gas rate of $1.49 for an entire year. These tactics are definitely effective. Market Researching Analyst Art Spinella lends mention in the AdAge article to the fact that 60% of Americans today are aware of Hyundai as a brand compared to 40% two years ago.

Press Release:

HENNESSEY TUNER SCHOOL TRANSFORMS HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE INTO 500-HORSEPOWER BEAST FOR SEMA

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 10/29/2009 - Demonstrating the wide range of aftermarket potential for the Genesis Coupe, Hyundai Motor America has partnered with Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) and the Tuner School to develop a powerful entry for this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. The matte black, carbon fiber-wrapped Hennessey Genesis Carbon Coupe is designed with a high-end European look and performance capabilities to match. The vehicle will be in Hyundai’s display at the Las Vegas Convention Center Nov. 3–6, 2009 (booth # 24387).

Founded by HPE president John Hennessey, Tuner School is a 14-week program dedicated to teaching its students the secrets to success in the high-performance automotive aftermarket. It was established as a way to offer its students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hone their craft, learn from professionals in the field, and springboard their career in the aftermarket industry.

“The Genesis Coupe architecture is the ideal platform for tuners looking to make everyday modifications to their vehicles and our students at the Tuner School took full advantage,” said Hennessey. “The visually stunning complete carbon fiber matte black wrap and high-end performance benchmarks create a monster SEMA car.”

HPE and the Tuner School will blow away the SEMA crowd with its Genesis Coupe achieving 500 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, 465 lb-ft of torque, an estimated 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds and a quarter mile time of 12.5 seconds. These aggressive performance capabilities were accomplished through a variety of engine modifications. The Genesis Carbon Coupe features a Hennessey Custom Single Turbo System, Precision 66 mm ball bearing turbocharger, Tial blow-off valve and 44 mm wastegate, a HKS boost controller and upgraded injectors and fuel pump, among other additions.

“To work with a leading tuner such as John Hennessey and his Tuner School is a testament to the potential of our rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe,” said Michael Deitz, manager, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “With its 500 horsepower and 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds we expect this vehicle to be one of the stars of SEMA.”

On the outside, SEMA Show attendees will find Savini lightweight wheels with chrome lips and silver centers, Eibach springs and Brembo lightweight rotors.

HENNESSEY TUNER SCHOOL

Tuner School’s unique curriculum immerses its students in a combination of classroom education and hands-on experience, all while surrounded by the day-to-day operations of HPE’s 30,000+ square-foot facility. Spanning a range of horsepower-induced topics, including engine building, forced induction and dyno testing, Tuner School covers all aspects of building and modifying some of the fastest cars in the world. With dozens of high-horsepower vehicles coming and going, students are placed in a rare position to experience every nuance of working within a high-performance automotive business.
Press Release:

GENESIS SEDAN TO RECEIVE CUSTOM PAINT GRAPHIC LIVE AT SEMA
Street Concepts and Designer Courtney Mason Bring an Artistic Display to the Show Floor

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 10/28/2009 - Hyundai Motor America and Street Concepts, one of the leading developers of auto show vehicles, bring custom vehicle design live to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show with a paint demonstration on a Genesis sedan. Detroit-based illustrator and graphic designer Courtney Mason will paint a one-of-a-kind graphic on a Pearl White Street Concepts Genesis sedan in Hyundai’s display at the Las Vegas Convention Center Nov. 3–6, 2009 (booth #24387). This marks the eighth consecutive year Hyundai has partnered with Street Concepts.

Using special paint pens, Mason will place her signature stamp on a “blank canvas” Genesis sedan. Mason’s illustrations are typically figurative and inspired by organic forms found throughout nature. As the co-founder of Studio Jellyfish (http://www.studiojellyfish.com), Mason has worked with clients such as Nokia, Motorola, Sony BMG, VH1 and Rockstar Games.

In addition to the graphic, the Street Concepts Genesis exterior will be outfitted with 3M carbon fiber roof panels, black chrome accents by Chrome Tech, and upper and lower spoilers from RKSport. The vehicle will boast upper and lower E&G front mesh grilles also finished in black chrome by Chrome Tech. Interior features include custom suede and piano black detailing as well as carbon fiber dash accents.

“The Genesis sedan serves as the perfect platform for a one-of-a-kind high-performance vehicle at SEMA,” said Shawn Williams, owner, Street Concepts. “We were able to capitalize on what the Genesis already has to offer – smooth lines, luxurious interior features and a world-class Tau V8 engine – to create a customized vehicle sure to inspire the tuner crowd.”

The custom Genesis will showcase Nutek Series 530 22-inch wheels featuring Chrome Tech black chrome wheel centers with black lips and General Exclaim UHP tires. Eibach lowering springs, Brembo brakes and a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust will further enhance the performance of the standard 4.6-liter V8 engine, improving on the impressive 375 horsepower pumped out by the factory engine.

Audio and video enhancements will include a custom Harman International audio system, Nav-TV interface and Vizualogic headrest monitors.

“Matching the sophisticated design of the Genesis sedan with the artistic ability of Courtney Mason and the show-car experience of Shawn Williams created a ‘dream team’ for SEMA,” said Michael Deitz, manager, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Inspired by the creative minds involved in the project, we decided to showcase the final design of the vehicle live on the showroom floor to involve the SEMA crowd in the experience.”

STREET CONCEPTS

Press Release:

RHYS MILLEN RACING CONVERTS GENESIS COUPE INTO PREMIER SPORTS CAR WITH MID-ENGINE V8 FOR SEMA

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 22, 2009 – As the centerpiece of this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) fabricated a Genesis Coupe with the award-winning 4.6-liter Tau V8 powerplant to develop the RM460 Genesis Coupe. The mid-engine configuration and enhancements create a 500-horsepower street car worthy of taking on any track or road course. Millen was drawn to the design similarities between the Genesis Coupe and the new Ferrari 599XX, which influenced the vehicle’s classic low profile and race-inspired look. This marks the second year of the partnership between RMR and Hyundai creating show-stopping Genesis Coupes with the ultimate in aftermarket appeal.

“We’ve enhanced the original performance features and created a rear hatch for complete engine access and viewing pleasure,” said Rhys Millen, owner, Rhys Millen Racing. “The Genesis Coupe platform combined with the Tau V8 borrowed from Hyundai’s upscale Genesis sedan have allowed us to build a true show-stopper for SEMA. Placing the Tau V8 in the middle of the Genesis Coupe’s architecture will improve vehicle handling, acceleration and braking and enhance the already dynamic driving experience.”

The Tau V8 engine replaces the original back seat and maintains most of its original architecture with upgrades to eight individual throttle bodies and a set of JE pistons that bumps the compression ratio to 11.0:1. An engine management system by AEM has been added to speak to the factory Engine Control Unit (ECU) while maintaining all factory dash and gauge cluster functions. A Mendeola five-speed sequential transmission has been mounted to the V8 and tuned for a maximum speed of 182 mph.
Hyundai’s CEO John Krafcik said today that it is considering extending its Hyundai Assurance incentive program in the United States. The program, which began in January of this year, allows consumers to return their vehicles if they lose their job.

Competitors, including General Motors and Ford, have widely copied the Hyundai Assurance Program, which has helped increase sales of the South Korean automaker during an economic hardship in the United States. Fewer than 50 customers have returned their vehicles under the program, Krafcik said.

Krafcik told Reuters that the automaker will keep the program running through the end of 2009. He said that Hyundai is “thinking now about how much further we should take it.”

Hyundai’s sales rose 20 percent to 342,217 vehicles in the United States during the first 9 months of 2009. Overall U.S. auto sales fell almost 30 percent.

Accent Still the Lowest Priced Car in America

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ — How did Hyundai improve Accent’s EPA fuel economy for 2010 without adding thousands of dollars to the price like a hybrid does? The answer is the introduction of the high mileage, low price “Blue” edition and smart engineering to all Accent models. Accent’s fuel efficiency is improved by up to nine percent, reaching as high as 36 miles per gallon on the highway which is better than Honda Fit and Nissan Versa.

ACCENT BLUE AND FUEL ECONOMY ADVANCEMENTS

All 2010 Accents receive lower friction engine components, aerodynamic improvements, lower-rolling-resistance silica tires, a “smart” alternator management system and other enhancements all aimed at reducing fuel consumption. The Accent Blue receives the same treatment plus revised transmission gear ratios and lowered ride height to achieve even greater fuel efficiency. The Blue edition is the lowest priced Accent, starting at $9,970. Accent Blue delivers up to 36 miles per gallon and the highest combined fuel economy of 31 miles per gallon in its lineup, achieving one of the highest mpg-per-dollar ratios in the industry. This new high mileage Accent will be identified with unique “Blue” badging.

To help Accent drivers get the most out of their cars Hyundai has added an economy indicator. The “eco indicator” on automatic transmission models is a green ECO light to indicate when the driver is achieving good fuel economy. Manual transmission models have an EcoShift indicator to inform drivers of the optimal time to shift.

NEW EQUIPMENT HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2010
— High mileage, low price “Blue” edition
– “Blue” edition available with air conditioning

Steering wheel audio controls, blue back-lit gauges and an iPod/USB jack also make debuts on Accent. Now when an iPod is connected to the iPod/USB port, located in the front storage area, not only does it play music through the vehicle’s six-speaker audio system, but also charges the iPod. The iPod/USB input also allows the driver to access tracks with the new steering wheel audio controls. This new system also enables both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than from the iPod itself.

ACCENT “BLUE” Three-door – the perfect entry-level car

This year, Hyundai introduces a high mileage “Blue” edition of its Accent. When shoppers see the “Blue” badge it means the model delivers outstanding fuel economy without adding thousands of dollars to the price. In fact, the “Blue” model will be priced lower than any other Accent model, assuring it will be both efficient and economical. Hyundai is focused on achieving an excellent mpg-per-dollar ratio with its “Blue” models. Fuel-efficient modifications include low friction engine components, lower-rolling-resistance silica tires, an optimized thermostat, a “smart” alternator management system, improvements to the underbody airflow management, revised transmission gear ratios and lowered ride height.

Key standard equipment includes a five-speed manual transmission with EcoShift indicator, sport-tuned power assisted rack-and-pinion steering, dual front, side and head curtain airbags, variable intermittent windshield wipers, six-way adjustable driver seat with armrest, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, rear spoiler and rear window defroster. Accent builds on Hyundai’s reputation for offering loads of standard equipment by also adding adjustable head restraints for all seating positions, cabin air filtration, tachometer, digital clock, two 12-volt outlets and remote hood release.

Accent GS

In keeping with Hyundai’s high-value approach to standard equipment, the Accent GS offers standard automatic transmission, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, maplights, rear wiper, and bodycolor mirrors and door handles. Convenient storage areas are placed throughout the interior, including the front center console, driver storage tray and a rear storage tray. Two cupholders are ideally situated between the driver and passenger for easy reach. A 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback makes it easy to load large objects, or to mix cargo and passengers for maximum effectiveness. The roof-mounted micro antenna is aerodynamic, flexible and improves signal strength.

The GS Premium Package includes a 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with 6 speakers and iPod/USB inputs, power windows with driver’s window auto-down feature, power mirrors and door locks and remote keyless entry with alarm and panic alert. On the outside, the 16-inch alloy wheels and P205/45R16 tires deliver enhanced road-holding capability, and fog lights keep the driver’s path illuminated in adverse weather. The SE trim is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and metallic interior accents. Additional storage is available with a front passenger seatback pocket and front door bottle holders.

ACCENT GLS

To simplify the buying process, the four-door Accent sedan comes in a single GLS trim level with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. GLS trim offers a wide range of features, including several items that are either optional or unavailable on competitive vehicles such as a powerful 110-horsepower 1.6-liter CVVT engine, power steering, rear coat hook, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, AM/FM/XM /CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary iPod/USB inputs, driver and passenger illuminated vanity mirrors and standard air conditioning.
Many of the major automakers reported significant declines in sales last month as the automotive market recovered from a Cash for Clunkers hangover. GM reported a decline of 45 percent, while Ford reported a decline of 5 percent and Chrysler reported a decline of 42 percent. Even Toyota and Honda reported a decline of 13 and 20 percent respectively.

However, there was one company that was a major bright-spot – Hyundai. The Korean automaker continued its record-setting 2009 pace and sold a total of 55,134 vehicles in Sept., an increase of 26 percent year-over-year from Sept. 2008.

It’s difficult to say that during an economic downturn such as this, Hyundai isn’t gloomy.

“We knew we had some really strong product coming out,” John Krafcik, CEO Hyundai’s U.S. operations told The Detroit News. “We focused on the opportunities that deteriorating economic conditions would provide us.”

He said that Hyundai’s executives drew up a plan with a big marketing budget “to come out very, very strong in the first quarter and take as much market share as we could.”

Hyundai’s market share has increased by 4.4 percent. When you include sales of its sister brand Kia Motor Corp. Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group together increased their market share by 2 points to 7.5 percent – overtaking Japan’s Nissan in the United States.

Guess we now know what Honda’s CEO, Ito Takanobu, meant when he said: “Hyundai is awesome. They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving.”

Honda’s CEO Ito Takanobu said that he sees Hyundai as a huge threat to the future of Japanese automakers.

“Hyundai is awesome,” Takanobu said. “They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving.”

Of course there’s good reason behind his compliment. The Korean automaker has seen strong sales growth all over the world and has been the top selling brand in Britain for retail sales.

Even Nissan’s designer, Shiro Nakamura, is complementing Hyundai. “Hyundai is the biggest threat for the Japanese automakers,” he said. “They have the technology, but they seem to have cheaper labor.”

One would be hard-pressed to argue that the cash-for-clunkers was wildly successful at bringing consumers into showrooms this summer. The hype, however, has ended and September has seen sales rates below that of June, before the program began.

September’s sales rate came in at 9.51 million units, compared to 9.55 million in June. Ken Czubay, VP of US marketing for FoMoCo had this to say to Automotive News about the years numbers, “I’ve been in the auto business for 39 years, and I’ve never seen a roller coaster year like this,”

Ford fared fairly well though, as GM and Chrysler dropped 40% as predicted by analysts, Honda fell 20% and Toyota’s sales were down 13%, all compared to Ford’s drop of 5% following two consecutive months of year-over-year gains. Subaru and Hyundai-Kia, up 10% and 3% respectively, were able to sustain growth.

Industry wide performance was down almost 1/4 when compared with the previous September, and brought the decline for the previous 9 month period to 27%. August was the first month this year, and thus far the only one, to break 1 million units sold.

Press Release:

HYUNDAI LAUNCHES STRETCH EDITION OF ITS LUXURY FLAGSHIP, EQUUS

- 300 mm longer than the sedan version, increasing comfort for the VIP passenger

- Features award-winning Tau Engine in V8 5.0L version

With the comfort of passengers at the forefront of its design principle, the EQUUS Limousine, as it is named in Korea, offers passengers unparalleled levels of interior volume. The vehicle’s length is longer than major competitors by as much as 310 mm, with backseat legroom as much as 376 mm longer, as well.

To differentiate it from the EQUUS sedan, the stretch version is equipped with an exclusive horizontal cross-bar radiator grille with an emblem in the center. Thus, the exterior image exudes an impression of strength and confidence, in line with the vehicle’s elegant image.

EQUUS Limousine comes with a choice of two sophisticated engines: The Lambda 3.8L engine and the Tau 5.0L engine. The Tau 5.0 engine, applied to the stretch version for the first time, is a reinforced version of the Tau 4.6L engine that won the 2009 Ward’s 10 Best Engines award.

With a maximum output of 400ps and a peak torque rating of 51.0kg, the stretch version outperforms its competitors, such as the Lexus LS460L and Mercedes S500L by 20ps and 12ps, respectively.

The Tokyo Motor Show, held every two years, is one of Asia’s premier auto events. However, for the upcoming 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, automakers have been dropping out as the show gets hit hard by international automakers who have decided to sit out this year due to the global economic slump.

Hyundai Motor Co. is the latest foreign automaker to cancel its participation at next month’s show.

“Hyundai called last week and orally confirmed their intent to cancel,” said Toyokazu Ishida, who administers the international exhibition for the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. “It’s unbelievable,” Ishida told Automotive News

Chrysler, Ford and General Motors Company were among the first to drop out earlier this year.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata will go on sale in the United States early next year.

Instead, the new Sonata will be offered with Hyundai’s new 2.4L Theta II GDI 4-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 175-hp and returns an estimated fuel-economy of 22/32 mpg (city/highway). All engines will be mated to a 6-speed automatic.

The new 2011 Hyundai Sonata for the U.S. market is expected to debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Wards said that Hyundai is also nixing the V6 engine from its Tucson Crossover model.
