MTM has released a new tuning package for the Audi TT RS, a rebirth of the 5-clyinder engine that MTM says is “perfect motorization for drivers who like their car being suitable for racing.”

After undergoing some upgrades, the MTM Audi TT RS makes total of 424-hp and a peak torque of 413 lb-ft. That allows for a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 185 mph.

If you feel 424-hp is too much for you (and we don’t know why you would feel that way), MTM also offers a 404-hp upgrade and a 408-hp upgrade. To make it a little more exciting, MTM added original BIMOTO design in 19 and 20-inch wheels.

Press Release:

It is still being good for best lap timing: the MTM Ur-Quattro S1, with its 5 cylinders engine, has once again shown this summer that it gets around the Hockenheimring almost as fast as the Porsche Armada. 25 years younger as the legendary S1 and directly from the same development department, the tuning specialist presents the MTM TT-RS with the rebirth of the 5 cylinders engine as perfect motorization for drivers who like their car being suitable for racing. After the MTM power therapy, the sport car from Audi gets a power of 424 BHP and 560 Nm of torque and shows itself with a new aerodynamic which is based on the Ur-Quattro.

The secret: love for details and understanding of the new engine from Audi. In addition to the adjustment of the engine control unit, MTM has also worked on the exhaust system: new middle- and end- pipes with throttle valves. Moreover, an additional pre-pipe with metal catalyser can be built in. The result: a high-revving engine, lots of torque in every range of performance and an impressive sound thanks to MTM exhaust system technology with throttle valve. A compact sports car which will be good for best lap times and this not only on the small track of Hockenheim.

The MTM TT-RS can be ordered in 3 different stages of power enhancement. Besides the maximal stage of 424 BHP with 84 BHP more as the 340 from the series car, MTM also offer 2 stages with 404 and 408 BHP and 550 Nm. MTM sports rims with the original BIMOTO design in 19 and 20″, as well as suitable spacers in 20 mm and 30 mm are available.

Audi announced today that it will unveil the new 2010 Audi A8 sedan at the world’s most important design and art fair, Design Miami/ and Art Basel Miami Beach.

“Since our inception, Audi has embraced progress in the quest to create groundbreaking technologies and deliver new ideas to the road. Just as artists make it a mission to work for the untold future, so does Audi design to be relevant not just today, but for many years to come,” said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Audi AG. “The new Audi A8 embodies everything Audi stands for: fascinating innovation, uncompromising perfection, consummate craftsmanship, iconic design and new ways of thinking. This is why we chose to present this car in this progressive environment while continuing our commitment to fostering design culture and the arts.”

Why wouldn’t Audi just bring the 2010 A8 sedan to California at the 2009 LA Auto Show? Well, apparently Audi doesn’t want its flagship sedan overlooked in a stampede of other vehicle debuts.

Press Release:

Audi Celebrates ‘The Art of Progress’ on Miami Beach with World-premiere of the new Audi A8

- Audi will unveil all-new flagship model on the eve of the world’s most important art and design fairs at the Audi Pavilion
- Reveal will coincide with ‘The Art of Progress’ exhibition in collaboration with Design Miami/, Tom Dixon and the Rubell Family Collection
- Exhibition open to international fair visitors as satellite of Design Miami/ 2009

HERNDON, Va., Nov 19, 2009 – Audi today announced that the culmination of its 100th anniversary celebration will be held at the world’s most important art and design fairs, Design Miami/ and Art Basel Miami Beach. At this prestigious event, Audi will reveal for the first time the all-new 2010 edition of the brand’s flagship sedan, the Audi A8. The reveal will take place at the Audi Pavilion, a temporary museum structure built on Miami Beach in proximity to the iconic Fontainebleau hotel. The reveal and exhibition will coincide with the Vernissage of “The Art of Progress” exhibit, which itself is inspired by key attributes of the new A8, as well as the Audi brand’s core philosophy.

Being a satellite exhibition of Design Miami/ 2009, the “Art of Progress” will host a by-invitation-only Audi Collectors’ Brunch on December 1st and then open its doors to the fairs’ visitors and Miami residents from December 2nd to 5th. In addition, as “designer among designers,” Audi will showcase the new Audi A8 at a Design Miami/ site-specific installation: a full-size car will turn into a miniature collectible on a coffee-table and be surrounded by supersized furniture.

For the fourth year, Audi remains the Exclusive Automotive Sponsor of Design Miami/, the pre-eminent fair for limited-edition design, and continues to provide Q7 TDI clean diesel vehicles as VIP shuttles to the fair’s VIP guests.

Bringing together new works from British superstar designer Tom Dixon and a selection of contemporary art masterpieces on loan from the Rubell Family Collection, the “Art of Progress” will merge culture and technology, design and art in an exceptional way. Audi has partnered up with Design Miami/ to develop the exhibit’s curative concept.

“We see the combination of the Rubell Family Collection art exhibition and the Design Miami/ Tom Dixon installations working together to support the story of the new A8: ‘The Art of Progress,” says Ambra Medda, Design Miami/ Director. “Progress can be measured in both cultural and technological achievements. Culture speaks to the human desire for passion and meaning, while technology addresses our desire for easier, more refined, more sophisticated living. In the context of “The Art of Progress,” art represents both cultural progress and technological progress, both of which are synthesized in the new Audi A8.”

Related to the exhibition “Beg Borrow and Steal” concurrently on view at the Rubell Family Collection, the art on display at the Audi Pavilion explores the important trope of aesthetic appropriation, by which artists combine and recombine aspects of both everyday popular culture and the art-historical canon into their work. Also included in the Audi Pavilion are a number of pieces by John Baldessari, whose work often incorporates existing images and juxtaposes them to create new meanings.

“Our collaboration with Audi on this exhibition is particularly appropriate. In pioneering new innovations in technology, Audi appreciates that advances in science and engineering could not exist without corollary advances in art“, say Mera and Don Rubell, Founders of the Rubell Family Collection. “The most interesting contemporary art almost always engages with a future that is not yet known. The artists we chose for, “The Art of Progress” engage that future, building on the ideas and innovations of the past, coming up with their own, and leaving their mark on history. We are grateful to Audi for sharing with us this vision.”

Tom Dixon, through Design Research Studio, will present “Light Light.” A centerpiece in the “Art of Progress” exhibit, “Light Light” features 130-square meters of specially designed, aluminum-polyhedral lights and helium balloons that emphasize weightless structure and luminosity, craftsmanship and precision, all vital features both of Tom Dixon’s designs and the Audi brand’s core competences, such as lightweight aluminum construction and LED light design. For this installation, Tom Dixon’s designers and technicians have created and experimented with new shapes to demonstrate the craftsmanship, technical development and design passion involved in the making of the new Audi A8.

“We had privileged access to a world that very few people get to see,” says Tom Dixon. “The design and development areas of Audi are extraordinary exercises in the most complex and advanced manufacturing techniques. The constant pursuit of the ideal is an inspiration for anyone involved in design and industry. We looked at a series of qualities in the new Audi A8 that are difficult to articulate in words, and tried to find the purest and simplest ways to express them in our own way.”

Wanting more from Audi and its high-performance engineers, 23-year old industrial design student Marouane Bembli has come with his own Audi R10 concept.

“I’ve designed what I believe will be Audi’s new supercar, the R10,” Bembli said. “It features a mid-mounted V10 engine and a dry weight of 1200kg. I hope you like it!”

Press Release:

All about the Audi Pikes Peak TTS

The Audi Pikes Peak TTS is nicknamed “Shelley” by the Stanford DDL after Michele Mouton, arguably the most successful female rally driver to date who played a significant part in Audi’s racing history.

Goal
To collaborate with Stanford to build an autonomous vehicle capable of completing the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in a reasonable time using rally driving techniques.

Team:
Volkswagen Electronics Research Lab
Convert a vehicle to drive by wire, develop a safety architecture to ensure a reliable autonomous drive with no safety driver, and implement Stanford’s control algorithms on a system jointly developed with Sun Microsystems.

Stanford Dynamics Design Lab
Develop robust control algorithms that enable the vehicle to drive at the limits of handling on a variety of surfaces, and lets it complete the Pikes Peak course.

Sun Microsystems
Specify a hardware platform that can run Stanford’s real time algorithms and develop a framework that enables Real Time Java to the vehicle CAN system.

Vehicle:
Make and model: 2009 Audi TTS
Engine: 2.0L Turbocharged I4 DOHC
Transmission: 6-Speed S tronic automatic transmission
Fuel Consumption: City: 21 mpg
Highway: 29 mpg

The German Design Council said that it will present a 2010 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Audi A5 Coupe. What does the Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, Walter de Silva have to say about that?

“The Audi A5 Coupé is the most beautiful car I’ve ever designed and is well on its way to becoming a design icon. I’m therefore thrilled by this accolade, as it also validates my hard work. The A5 Coupé clearly has an automotive personality all its own. It is an absolute highlight of Audi’s progressive and stylish design language. The A5 is naturally a very powerful and supremely sporty automobile. Yet it isn’t the least bit aggressive or arrogant.”

This prestigious design award will be presented as part of the opening ceremony of the International Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt on February 12, 2010. Audi sold some 112,000 units of the A5 Coupe worldwide between its launch in June 2007 and late September 2009.

Personally, we’re bigger fans of the Audi S5.

According to a report by Car Magazine, who recently spoke with Audi executives, the A1 will also be available as a convertible (cabriolet) and as an estate.

“We will start with the three-door version with several different engine variants,” Audi’s sales and marketing boss Schwarzenbauer said. “Will we do further models? Look at what we do with the A3 range – we could something similar with the A1.”

Powertrain wise, the Audi A1 will most likely start with a 1.2L engine and top off a 1.8L turbo unit, both available in gasoline and diesel fuel types. You can also expect an electric, hybrid and an S1 variant as well. Rumor has it that the A1 will most likely be followed up by a Q1 SUV.

The Audi R4 is one model that we’ve heard a lot about from European media outlets, but nothing has ever been confirmed by Audi itself. Last we heard anything about the R4 it was reported that the model will be based on the Volkswagen Concept BlueSport that was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

According to a new report by AutoExpress, the R4 will be the production version of the e-tron concept, which was revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show last month. Audi’s American president, Johan de Nysschen, recently confirmed that the e-tron concept will enter production with prototypes to hit the roads within 24 months.

The UK publication said that the R4 is also likely to spawn petrol-engine versions with up to 300-hp for those of you that don’t care about going ‘green.’

If the report is to believed, the R4 will most likely arrive in 2012 in a roadster, coupe and convertible trim.

Press Release:

Audi TT-RS – The new “Ur-Quattro”

Latest creation from AVUS PERFORMANCE is something special for all Audi fans, especially those who remember the Ur-Quattro with its blistering 5 cyl. turbo sound. The remake by Audi is better known as the TT-RS which shares the engine and of course the sound.

With a stock power of 340bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque it is capable of doing the 0-60 in 4.6s. AVUS PERFORMANCE takes it a step forward and improves the power and the look of the TT-RS. Adjustable coilovers, gloss black 20″ Sportec Mono wheels make the TT-RS look much more aggressive. Thanks to the special setup which improves the factory suspension even further and makes the TT run a lot smoother not only on country roads. Different setups for the race track are avaiable either.

The matt black skin is something you will probably notice first when seeing the TT-RS. True to the motto “Gloss is out, matt is IN” tuner AVUS PERFORMANCE changes it to matt black (other colors avaiable on request). To give the TT-RS the final touch for the race track power has been increased significantly to a stunning 460bhp and more than 472 lb/ft of torque. 0-60 will be passed in about 3.8s and top speed increases to 194mph. Therefore AVUS PERFORMANCE modifies the turbo, ECU software and the exhaust system from turbo back with racing cats.

Attention, latest Sportec offer until 15th of December: Buy 4 wheels and pay only 3 (25% Discount)

- matt black “vinyl” – 1.999 Euro
- coilovers – 1.299 Euro
- modified ECU + exhaust system (460bhp / 472lb/ft) – price on request
- gloss black 20″ wheels with 255/30/20 Hankook S1 Evo – 6.400 Euro

Press Release:

Five Finalists Announced for the 2010 Green Car of the Year®

Winner to be Announced During an LA Auto Show Press Conference on Dec. 3

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 7, 2009 – Green Car Journal announced today its five finalists for the 2010 Green Car of the Year®, including the Audi A3 TDI, Honda Insight, Mercury Milan Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Golf TDI. For the fifth consecutive year, this prestigious award will be announced during a press conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show press days, Dec. 3.

The Green Car of the Year® award is a program that honors environmental leadership in the automobile field and recognizes vehicles that are readily available to consumers during the award year. Green Car Journal editors perform an exhaustive review of vehicle models to identify the five finalists. The winner is ultimately decided by jurors such as Jay Leno, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Carroll Shelby, Matt Petersen of Global Green USA and the Sierra Club’s Carl Pope, along with Green Car Journal editors.

“We’re seeing the trend for ‘green’ cars emerging at all levels, from entry-level cars to luxury models, and even performance cars and SUVs/crossovers,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. “Plus, an array of technologies and fuels as well as strategies like lightweighting and reducing rolling resistance are being applied to the challenge. Greater choice provides buyers a personal stake in lessening environmental impact, and that’s important.”

This year’s finalists reflect this diversity. For the first time an Audi makes the final five with its sporty A3 TDI clean diesel. Volkswagen’s new Golf TDI shows an expanding focus on clean diesel technology in the VW lineup. The Insight is a completely new hybrid sedan for Honda and the 2010 Toyota Prius is a totally redesigned, third-generation version of this popular hybrid model. The Milan Hybrid is Mercury’s application of its advanced-hybrid technology in an upscale mid-size sedan.

About Green Car of the Year®

The GCOY award is an important part of Green Car Journal’s mission to showcase environmental progress in the auto industry. Since 1992, Green Car Journal has focused on the intersection of automobiles, energy, and environment, first with an industry newsletter and then with an award-winning auto enthusiast magazine. Today, the magazine is considered the premier source of information on high fuel efficiency, low emission, advanced technology, and alternative fuel vehicles. Subscription information, along with a downloadable sample issue, can be found at GCJUSA.com. Green Car of the Year® is a registered trademark of Green Car Journal and RJ Cogan Specialty Publications Group, Inc.

About the Los Angeles Auto Show

The 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show will be held on Dec. 2-3 for press and Dec. 4-13 for the public. Media registration is now open. This year, the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), the world automobile trade association, has officially named the Los Angeles Auto Show as one of its sanctioned international exhibitions. While the Ingolstadt automaker has no plans to offer the A1 minicar or the A3 convertible in the U.S., it is considering other models for the North American market.

Sources say that besides the 5-door A3 2.0L clean diesel this year, Audi will offer a crossover (the Q3) and a sedan based on the A3 for the United States market.

Audi is almost considered the Subaru of the luxury market segment with its popular quattro all-wheel-drive system. No luxury automaker builds or sells more all-wheel-drive vehicles worldwide than Audi. During the first 8 months of 2009, Audi built a total of 190,500 vehicles with quattro all-wheel-drive.

The recently introduced Audi Q5, which recently tested, is the most successful SUV in its class worldwide – selling a total of 63,119 units in the first 8 months of 2009.

Audi confirmed today that it will expand its market position as the worldwide all-wheel-drive leader with the new Q3 SUV model.

The pioneer of lightweight construction and design, Audi, has developed an Audi A5 Coupe prototype that sheds 240 pounds by switching steel for an advanced aluminum and carbon fiber construction. When compared to the production steel-bodied Audi A5, which carries a curb weight of 3,130 lbs, the Audi A5 aluminum prototype weighs in at 2,888 lbs.

Audi says that with the use of aluminum and carbon fiber onto the aluminum Audi Space Frame architecture, the A5 prototype is able to achieve V6 performance with the use of a smaller 4-cylinder engine. Powered by a 2.0L Turbo FSI engine making 211-hp, the A5 prototype achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161-hp per ton. The production 265-hp A5 3.2 FSI V5 quattro gets 172-hp per ton.

Of course, it also helps fuel-economy… but we could care less about that (as enthusiasts – otherwise we love planet Earth).

Audi said it will continue research on new materials and alloys to keep reducing the weight of its vehicles.

Press Release:

ALUMINIUM A5 COUPE PROTOTYPE SHOWS THE LIGHTER SIDE OF AUDI

Lightweight construction pioneer highlights its technological lead

- Dynamic and efficient: Audi – pioneer of lightweight design for enhanced performance and optimised efficiency
- Aluminium-bodied A5 prototype aids development of the ASF concept
- Over 550,000 Audi models with an aluminium body since 1994
- New materials and technologies for the cars of tomorrow

A lightweight Audi A5 Coupe prototype has jettisoned over 100kg by swapping steel for advanced aluminium and carbon fibre construction in the interest of fuel economy, emissions reduction and handling agility. The A5 project is the latest example of the pioneering work undertaken by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand to extend efficiency optimisation measures well beyond the engine bay.

Taking an existing steel-bodied production car as its basis, the A5 project car clearly demonstrates the benefits of the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) concept with which Audi broke new ground 15 years ago, and which test beds of this kind help to evolve and improve. Use of the ASF principle reduces the weight of a car body by at least 40 per cent compared with conventional steel construction, and this shows in a kerb weight of 1,310kg for the aluminium A5 prototype, versus a total of 1,420kg for the equivalent steel-bodied series production model.

Thanks to the significant weight loss, achieved by mounting aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced plastics onto the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF), the A5 prototype is able to use a four-cylinder engine with its attendant economy and emissions advantages to deliver the performance of a higher output V6.

With the acclaimed 2.0-litre, 211PS Turbo FSI engine, the A5 achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161PS per tonne. For comparison, the ’standard’ A5 3.2 FSI V6 quattro with 265PS, which tips the scales at 1,540kg, shades it only by a fraction at 172PS per tonne.

The lightweight design of the test car not only enables a smaller engine to supplement a larger one with no impact on performance and gains in economy and emissions, but also has a knock-on effect on ancillaries such as the brakes and transmission, which can also be reduced in size and weight. It also enables the car to change direction noticeably more keenly and nimbly and, thanks to the reduction in unsprung weight, to ride with even more refinement.

15 years of lightweight construction experience
Over the past 15 years, Audi has employed the ASF principle in two generations of A8 luxury saloon, in the hyper-efficient, ahead-of-its-time A2 compact hatchback and in the celebrated R8 super car. ASF has also been re-interpreted in the creation of the latest TT Coupe and Roadster, which feature advanced steel and aluminium ‘hybrid’ construction that allows for outstanding weight distribution.

“One of our most enduring aims for the future is to reverse the weight spiral,” says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG responsible for Technical Development. “Lightweight design is the foundation of our entire approach to improving efficiency.”

Lightweight design is a strategic responsibility at Audi. It makes a significant contribution to dynamic potential and efficiency, helping to conserve resources and reduce operating costs. The electric drives of the future will add additional weight to the car and will initially only offer a limited range, making systematic lightweight design all the more important.

ASF: the reversal of the weight spiral
The reversal of the weight spiral that Audi initiated with the ASF principle which began with the Audi A8 of 1993 has major efficiency advantages. Every 100kg saved reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 to 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres, corresponding to a reduction of 8 to 11 grams of CO2 per kilometre. A lighter body is also the starting point for weight reductions on other parts of the car, such as the chassis or the fuel tank.

Meanwhile lightweight bodies are an absolute prerequisite for the electric drive systems of the future with their heavy batteries. The performance and range expected by customers cannot be achieved without them.

Audi has already built more than 550,000 vehicles with an aluminium body. Added to this are roughly 9,000 Lamborghinis – no other manufacturer in the world can even come close in terms of the number of vehicles or their diversity.

The ASF technology is an unparalleled success story. Audi has increased its lead step by step: in alloys, in the reduction of the number of parts and in production efficiency. Numerous innovations in development and production have raised the level of automation from 25 to over 80 percent, which is nearly on par with steel body construction.

In fabrication, traditional spot welding is being replaced by joining methods developed by Audi, including punch riveting, bonding or laser-MIG hybrid welding. In the TT and the R8, self-tapping screws are used to join many of the components. Another innovation is the laser-welded invisible seam on the roof of the TT.

A8, R8, TT and TT Roadster: the state of the art
The second generation of the A8 and the R8, TT Coupé and TT Roadster sports cars document the current state of the ASF technology. The superstructure of the current A8 weighs 218kg while the aluminium body of the R8, whose co-supporting engine frame is made of ultra light magnesium, tips the scales at 210 kg.

The TT Coupé and Roadster bodies weigh 206 kg and 251 kg respectively while the TT “family” also features an additional innovation. To ideally balance the axle loads between the front and back, Audi developed an innovative hybrid construction for its compact sports cars: Most of the body is made of aluminium, but steel is used in the rear.

Depending on the model, the kerb weight of the TT has been reduced by between 20 and 90 kg compared to the previous model which had an all-steel body. At the same time, the static torsional rigidity of the Coupé increased by 50 percent and that of the Roadster by an even more impressive 100 per cent.

The ASF provides the foundation for precise handling and a high level of passive safety. A lighter car has to dissipate less kinetic energy and is also does less damage to others involved in an accident. The lightweight design combines chassis responsiveness and efficiency in typical Audi fashion.

Foundations were laid almost 100 years ago
NSU built the Type 8/24, featuring a body made entirely of aluminium, in 1913, and 10 years later, the Audi Type K wore an experimental streamlined skin of this same material. In the 1930s, specialists from the Racing department of Auto Union manufactured aluminium panels by hand and used them to build the bodies and streamlining panels for their spectacular racing cars and land speed record cars.

Lightweight design advanced to the level of a strategic project at Audi in 1982 to invent a self-supporting body with a material roughly two-thirds lighter than conventional steel and also with a new geometry tailored to this material – the Audi Space Frame.

In 1985, Audi presented the body of an Audi 100 made of aluminium but still using a conventional monocoque design. The legendary concept sports cars of 1991, the Audi Avus quattro and the Audi quattro Spyder, had skins of the light metal but underneath were still supporting frames.

The new technology was ready for series production in 1993. A shining silver showcar with an unpainted body of polished aluminium was on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The predecessor to the A8 bore the designation ASF, the abbreviation for Audi Space Frame. The production model that debuted the following year was a milestone – the first large-volume production car with a self-supporting aluminium body.

The A8 paved the way for Audi into the premium league and it also sparked new developments for the traditional material of steel. The principle embodied by the first A8 still applies today: Die castings and extruded sections form a framework-like skeleton that incorporates aluminium panels as co-supporting elements. The components with their various cross-sections and shapes combine optimal function with low weight.

The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre
Audi established a special Aluminium Centre in Neckarsulm for development, production planning and quality assurance in 1994. The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre experiments with high-strength steels, tailored blanks, fibre-reinforced plastics and magnesium.

Heinrich Timm, the Head of the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre, says: “Aluminium remains the primary material, but we are intensively investigating the other materials, with our primary focus on fibre-reinforced composites.”

The lessons learned at the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre innovation foundry, which employs 150, have already served as the basis for a three-digit number of patents in development and production – a balance they can be proud of. The European Patent Office named Audi “European Inventor of the Year 2008″ for its achievements with the ASF technology.

Lightweight design in the rest of the vehicle
Audi also makes systematic use of lightweight design in the drive chain and the chassis. Many engines uses aluminium and vermicular graphite cast iron, which is the result of a high-tech production process, to reduce the weight of the crankcase. Many models have chassis with predominately aluminium parts.

Carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are available as an option in the high-performance models. Other highlights of lightweight design include brake callipers, bonnets and boot lids, side panels or cover components made of aluminium and steering wheel rims or instrument panel mounts made of magnesium.

Experience from the world of motor sports flows back into the development work – the reduction and distribution of weight are extremely important for Audi’s pioneering diesel-engined Le Mans sports-prototypes and its DTM (touring) cars. The race cars provide the production development engineers with important information about carbon and its combination with metal.

Research continues into new materials and alloys, with the focus on minimal weight with maximum durability as well as design and fabrication compatible with the materials.

Press Release:

Virtual test drive with Audi’s e-tron electric concept car

* Audi driving game on PlayStation®Home starting in December
* Audi’s brand presence in a virtual world
* Audi tv available now through PlayStation Home

Audi fans will be able to drive the e-tron concept car through PlayStation Home starting in late 2009. Audi is the first carmaker to develop its own virtual area there, known as the Audi Space. The Audi e-tron, a high-performance sports car with a purely electric engine, was introduced at the International Motor Show (IAA). Starting in December, it will be available in the Vertical Run driving game within the Audi Space.

Racing enthusiasts will soon be able to view the Audi drive concept of the future in PlayStation Home, a 3D social gaming service for the PlayStation 3 community. Four motors – one per wheel – power the e-tron when it drives along the three-dimensional racetrack in Vertical Run. The game will be available exclusively in the new Audi Space within PlayStation Home.

“Most young people gain their first driving experience from video games,” explains Kai Mensing, who is responsible for video games and virtual worlds in Online Marketing at Audi. “With the Audi Space, we can bring this target group into contact with our brand in a highly emotion-packed and interactive environment, and demonstrate our ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ with the virtual e-tron race.”

The goal of Vertical Run is to beat the competition in a multiplayer challenge by collecting enough electrical energy and avoiding driving errors in the e-tron, in order to reach the highest possible speed. While all PlayStation Home users will be able to access Audi Space – with its centrally placed tower reminiscent of major cities like Shanghai and Chicago – the Audi apartments located above the city will only be available to the best drivers.

“It was important to us to create an environment with Audi Space that differed from a classic showroom at an Audi dealership,” Mensing said. “To achieve that, we got together with the architects at Allmann Sattler Wappner and developed an interactive concept where the focus is on selected Audi models, making it possible to experience the brand in a selective, interactive way.”

Users don’t have to wait until the Vertical Run driving game goes online in Audi Space to find Audi content. Audi tv reports are already available in the cinema within PlayStation Home. In 2010, additional Audi content will be added to Audi Space. The U.K. software developer VEEMEE LLP is responsible for implementation of the virtual experience.
