The latest Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S generations have just hit dealerships with Porsche backing the models as being “the most invigorating ownership experience yet.”

Both variants have been made over, while still maintaining Porsche’s distinct lines. The overhaul modified or replaced 90 percent of the car’s components, and includes a 100lb weight drop, and a lower, longer and wider body.

Performance enhancements such as engine and transmission thermal management, Automatic Start/Stop, electrical system recuperation, and electro-mechanical power steering all help with fuel efficiency. What stands out the most in this upgrade, however, is the world’s first seven speed manual transmission both the Carrera and Carrera S come equipped with.

Coupled to the seven-speed manual gearbox on the Carrera is a new 3.4-liter boxer engine that produces 5 additional horsepower over the previous 3.6-liter. Total output for the new Carrera hits 350hp, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The Carrera S gets 15 extra horses with an engine larger in displacement at 3.8-liters, kicking out 400hp, and shaving .3 seconds off the Carrera’s 0-60 mph time. The 911 Carrera has a top speed of 179mph, while the Carrera S hits 188mph. An available Sports Chrono Package Plus puts the 0-60mph time down to 3.9 seconds.

Pricing for the new generation starts at $82,100 for the 911 Carrera Coupe, and $96,400 for the 911 Carrera S Coupe.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera comes from a new 3.4 liter boxer 6-cylinder making 350-hp. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is powered by a 3.8 liter boxer making 400-hp. Mated to a Porsche’s PDK 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 911 Carrera runs from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and 4.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package’s Launch Control function. While the output and performance of the 2013 BMW M6 has been pumped up over its predecessors, the new model consumers roughly 30 percent less fuel due to the introduction of new BMW EfficientDynamics technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration and the Auto Start-Stop function.

The BMW M6 Convertible will hit dealerships in June 2012 as a 2012 model year, while the M6 Coupe will arrive in dealerships in the late summer of 2012 as a 2013 model year. Pricing, EPA fuel-economy ratings, standard and optional equipment will be announced at a later date.

Ever since the new Nissan GT-R made its return, it’s been considered the pinnacle of supercar performance. It nails everything from acceleration, to braking, to cornering to the overall way it makes a driver feel. Our friends at AutoCar decided to pin the new 540-hp 2013 Nissan GT-R (known as the 2012 model year in the UK) against the new 560-hp 2012 BMW M5 to find out if the new M5 can hold up to the hardcore Godzilla.

Volkswagen is beefing up positions at its Chattanooga production facility to increase output from 31 to 35 cars per hour. The jobs will be integrated into the company’s current two-shift operation and filled by full-time Volkswagen employees.

“We have had good success hiring local people who can work together as a team to build our cars safely and with the highest quality,” said Hans-Herbert Jagla, Executive Vice President of Human Resources, Volkswagen Group of America Chattanooga Operations, LLC. “Now, we are excited to have 200 more people join our team.”

The move comes as Volkswagen tries to keep up with strong demand of the new Passat sedan.

The plant currently employs 2,500 people. Volkswagen is aiming to add another 200 employees.

Refresher: The 2012 Volkswagen Passat is offered in three trim levels, S SE and SEL. Entry-level 2012 Passat models are powered by a 2.5L 5-cylinder engine making 170-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. Standard transmission choice include a 5-speed manual while an optional 6-speed automatic is available. Moving up, buyers can pick a 2.0 TDI Clean Diesel 4-cylinder unit making 140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission, the 2012 Passat TDI gets 43 mpg on the highway and a range of approximately 800 miles. The range-topping 2012 Volkswagen Passat is powered by a 3.6L VR6 units producing 280-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed DSG, the 2012 Passat VR6 will get 28 mpg on the highway. The 2012 Toyota Prius C will be available in four grades with each carrying a Hybrid Synergy Drive 1.5-liter DOHC engine with VVT-i, a 60 hp permanent magnet AC synchronous motor, and a 144 volt nickel-metal hydride battery which generates 25.9 hp of electric propulsion for a total system net output of 99-hp. Obviously 0 to 60 mph will take you about 2 days but you’ll be managing some strong fuel-economy numbers.

The Price C One comes standard with  automatic climate control, tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio, climate, multi-information display and Bluetooth hands free phone controls; and remote keyless entry with illuminated entry, a 3.5-inch full color TFT multi-information display and USB port with iPod connectivity.

Buick has just released some news stating that there’s a new transmission option for their Regal lineup, specifically for the performance-oriented GS. Previously offered with only a six-speed manual transmission, the new 2013 Regal GS comes with a no-cost option for an Aisin AF40 automatic.

“With the Regal GS, we made a conscious decision to go against the current trend and give enthusiasts the manual transmission they desire as standard equipment” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. “Adding an automatic simply makes the performance of the GS even more accessible.”

And with that statement, it seems that General Motors, or at least Buick, is making a bet that manual transmissions are still desirable and it’s comforting to hear that GM is keeping the enthusiast in mind.

Actual performance figures for the automatic-equipped Regal GS have yet to be announced, but Buick says that it will match the manual version’s sprint to 60 of just 6.7 seconds while returning 19 mpg’s in city runabouts and 27 on the highway.

The new six-speed automatic will also be equipped to the Regal eAssist, boosting its EPA estimate to around 36 mpg’s in the combined average cycle. At the expense of this newly equipped Regal eAssist is the discontinuation of the base 2.4L Regal.

“Buick is committed to increasing innovation across the lineup,” said DiSalle “By making the advanced eAssist powertrain standard on a second vehicle, we are putting the spotlight on smart technology.”

While BMW had a very strong 2011, the Munich automaker failed to keep its lead over Mercedes-Benz in January U.S. sales. BMW sales rose 3.1 percent in January 2012 with a total of 16,405 units delivered in the United States. Mercedes-Benz was up a total of 24 percent with a total of 20,306.

Lexus sales fell 4.6 percent to 12,274 vehicles in January 2012.

BMW sales in 2011 rose 13 percent to 247,907 units, helping it claim the title as the top-selling luxury brand in the United States. The number helped dethrone Lexus, which held the spot for 11 years.

Lexus sales fell 13 percent in 2011 to 198,552 units bringing it to No. 3, while Mercedes-Benz came in second selling 2,715 units less than BMW.

BMW of North America today unveiled six digital shorts, which are a part of a new national advertising campaign to support the launch of the new 2012 BMW 3-Series, which will go on sale Feb. 11.

Two of the shorts will air in ads during Super Bowl XLVI in regions across the U.S.: the first entitled ‘The Big Grab,’ in the New York Tri-State area; and the second, ‘The Close Call,’ in the Southern California-Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston areas.

“The BMW 3 Series is the global benchmark for a sports sedan,” said Dan Creed, Vice President of Marketing, BMW of North America. “With these shorts, we turn a spotlight on the innovations that make the 3 Series the standard to which others aspire.”

SRT Brand and Motorsports Director of Marketing and Operations Beth Paretta handed over the keys to the drivers at the Fiorano circuit in Maranello, Italy, yesterday.

The exclusive 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 models received a special SRT exterior treatment; taking design inspiration from Ferrari styling, coated in Rosso Corsa colored paint. The grille is painted matte black with red inserts, a black racing stripe has been added, and the mirrors are capped in carbon fiber. An Italian flag was painted on the underside of the rear spoiler, as well.

A set of custom, forged aluminum 20-inch wheels have been fitted to the Grand Cherokee models, which have also been dropped by 1.5 inches all the way around.

On the inside, Ferrari Red leather details were fitted throughout the cabin, with contrast stitching and a yellow-accented instrument panel.

Power for the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes from the new V-8 6.4-liter Hemi, which features Fuel Saver technology, making 470-hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, making a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds.

Today is a very special day for all American muscle car fans – production of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has kicked off in Canada (ironic huh?) at GM’s Oshawa Assembly Plant.
