When Ford first introduced the new Focus RS to the European market, it had planned to produce only 1,200 units. However, due to high-demand, Ford of Europe has decided to build an additional 400 units of the 305-hp Ford hatchback – exclusively for sale in German.

Ford said that this is the final decision and that there won’t be any more Focus RS units build after the 400 units are completed. If you live in Germany and you’re interested, you can order the car now and expect delivery in the early part of 2010.

Refresher: Power comes from a 2.5L 5-cylinder Duratec engine with a large Borg Warner K16 turbocharger. That makes a total of 300-hp and a peak torque.

When releasing a convertible version of a luxury-performance coupe, there is much risk that the aesthetics of the car will suffer. This crisis was averted however, by the Infiniti design team with regards to the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible. From certain angles, the convertible looks better than its sibling, the coupe.

The three-piece power retractable roof provides for an extremely stylish and sharp looking vehicle with roof either up or down. “This new G has dual beauty – it looks as good with the top up or down – along with a beautiful, leather-appointed interior that is meant to be experienced wide-open,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing at Nissan.

The G37 Convertible is Infiniti’s answer to the BMW 3-Series Convertible and the Lexus IS-C. How does it compete? Let’s take a look:

2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible:

Base Price: $43,850.
Price as Tested: $51,865.
Engine: 3.7L DOHC 24-valve VVEL V6 – 325-hp/267 lb-ft of torque.
Transmission: 7-speed automatic with Drive Sport and Manual Shift mode.
Curb Weight: 3,642 lbs.
0 to 60 mph: 5.3 seconds.
Fuel-Economy: 17/25 mpg (city/highway).

Exterior:

We were not impressed by the styling of the Lexus IS-C. When compared to the BMW 3-Series Convertible however, the G37 Convertible stands up fairly strong. Both cars are hard top convertibles and offer sleek drop-top designs.

With the top up, the G37 Convertible is not very discernible from the Coupe. With the top down however, the Coupe barely stands in comparison to the Convertible. The roof retracts in about 30 seconds with the simple push of a button located just below the gearbox. We did however, have one gripe with the retraction process; instead of a simple one-touch button, the motor requires the driver to hold the button down throughout the entire retraction process.

Infiniti’s Scratch Shield paint, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, dual chrome tip exhaust, chrome front-grille, LED taillights, and HID bi-functional head-lamps all come standard on the G37 Convertible. Our test car came equipped with a $1,350 optional Sports Package which upgrades the 18-inch wheels to 19-inch ones and adds W-rated performance tires, sports tuned steering, sport brakes, and aluminum pedals. Our test-model was also equipped with optional illuminated kick plates, available for $300.

Interior:

The interior does not sway much from that of the Coupe, save for the optional Bose Open Air Sound System designed to dynamically change the equalization settings based on outside noise coming into the car. The system offers great sound quality via its 13 speakers, two of which are embedded into the driver and front-passenger headrests.

When compared to the 3-Series Convertible and the IS Convertible, the G37 Convertible Coupe takes best-in-class, hands down. Interior features that come standard on the G37 Convertible include:

8-way power heated front leather seats with adjustable lumbar support

Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition

Adaptive Climate Control System

Rear-seat heater ducts under front seats

Power windows with one-touch auto-up/down Remote power door locks with auto-locking feature

Illuminated entry system with delayed fade-out

Dual front cup holders and door bottle holders

Front and rear carpeted floor mats

6-speaker audio system with AM/FM, AUX audio jacks, in-dash 6-disc CD changer with MP3 playback capability and XM Satellite Radio.

Infiniti Controller with 7-inch color display for audio, fuel economy, maintenance and comfort and convenience systems. It also acts as a display for the Rear View Camera.

The $3,250 Premium Package adds:

Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System.

The Bose Open Air Sound System featuring noise adaptive technology with 13 speakers, including Bose front seat personal speakers with iPod connectivity

Advanced Climate Control System with the cleaner Plasmacluster air purifier.

Memory system for driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors.

2-way power lumbar support for driver’s seat.

Cooled-seats.

Auto-dimming rear view mirror with HomeLink® Universal Transceiver.

Rain-sensing wipers.

The Navigation Package, which runs $1,850 and is available with or without the Premium Package will get you:

Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with Lane Guidance and 3-D building graphics

XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic information

9.3GB Music Box hard drive with CompactFlash slot

Infiniti Voice Recognition for climate control, audio and navigation systems

Infifniti also offers for the G37 Convertible, the Technology Package, which is available without the Navigation Package, but (ridiculously enough) not without the Premium Package. This package adds:

Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking

Adaptive Front lighting System

Pre-Crash Seat Belts

The only real complaint we have concerning the interior of this car is the structure of the options package. It is a bit ridiculous that the the most expensive options package is a prerequisite for the least expensive. Aside from that, the power seat switches are a little hard to access without the door closed.

Performance:

Dropping the top of the ‘09 G37 Convertible really enables the driver to experience the sounds put out by the 325-hp, 3.7L V6 engine that puts out a maximum torque of 267 lb-ft. Either the 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic will see this car through to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. That’s .2 seconds faster than the BMW 335i Convertible and a full half-second faster than the Lexus IS-C.

As is generally an issue with any hardtop convertible, the weight of the 457 pound folding steel top compromises handling in spite of the revised rear-suspension. Structural rigidity is also compromised – another common issue with convertibles – with the top down, and this makes for a very noticeable (though not terrible) rattle when driving with the top down.

Overall:

One thing is certain; the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible is one good looking topless vehicle, compared to the competition.

Given the starting price $43,850 (before the $865 Destination and Handling fees) the G37 Convertible is a car definitely worth checking out. This is the best price in class as the BMW 335i starts at $50,700, and the Lexus IS-C starts slightly above the Infiniti at $44,390.

A new and improved version of Specter Werkes’ latest Corvette C6 GTR will be distinguished by its unique BASF Pearl Blue exterior color and HRE CF40 carbon fiber wheels next week at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Based on Corvette Z06, the new Corvette GTR is a result of a collaboration between Specter Werkes and Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. Lingenfelter provided a twin-turbo system that takes power of the 7.0L LS7 engine to a whopping 800-hp. 0-60 mph and top speed figures were not released but we’re pretty sure they’re nothing short of impressive.

Other than that, Specter Werkes added some styling kits that makes this Z06 look much more aggressive than the stock Corvette ZR1.

Pat (in e-mail) How many miles per gallon are you getting and how is the handling?

We are averaging 18.5 mpg and handling so far is very impressive. Taking turns at high-speeds makes you feel very confident.

gigan: Compared to this, I can see how people think Acuras have too many buttons. However, I wonder if it is bc Acura has more toys to play w/?

The Infiniti G37 S Convertible has a lot of toys to play with as well; although it’s very simple to navigate around the technological features offered unlike Audi’s confusing MMI system.

Bob: During your “test drive” can you try to flex the body on the G37. I am curious is the cobvertible will have any rattles or sqeaks as the car is brought over bumps. Please try to find a ramp such as a up or down ramp going into a hotel or shopping center. Slowly approach allow one front wheel to drop low / or higher while the rest of the car is level then slowly take the ramp see if there is any flexing creak or squeals coming from the hardtop. You can also do this with some driveways that go downhill then drop to the street.

I had a 2005 G35x that I named “RattleRocket” after the first two years. Everything rattled and sqeaked on that car. I now have an 2008 G37 which is a huge improvment in interior quality and rattles and squeaks. I am considering a 2010 G37 Convertible or another G37 coupe in the spring and I am curious if that hardtop will be quiet enough for me. Trust me I will take the car on a long test drive myself, but this is stuff that you should be looking for in a car.

Second question is how is the 7-speed ? My 2008 has the 5-speed and the car now only has 15,000 miles and sometimes I swear the damn thing slips and sometimes I feel a bit feedback not when changing gears but simply accelerating in gear. Still the G37 rules over any other car that is why I still purchased a second one after my first “RattleRocket”. Hopefully Infiniti is continuously improving quality and I will be a third time return buyer.

“RattleRocket” – very creative. Indeed we have noticed that in previous Infiniti ‘G’ cars we’ve driven. However, that noise is minimized in the convertible. Nonetheless, it is still there. In terms of interior noise, the G37 Convertible is fairly quiet – very quiet when compared to other hard-top convertibles we’ve driven.

The 7-speed automatic transmission – well I hate it. It denies you downshifts and even upshifts. I would rather get a car like this in a manual-transmission but our test-car happens to be a 7-speed automatic and it’s very annoying. However, it does shift pretty fast.

The chilly weather has been fairly forgiving this week as we test-drive our 2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible. Today we’re going to give you a little tour around the inside of the new Infiniti G37 drop-top.

“This new G has dual beauty – it looks as good with the top up or down – along with a beautiful, leather-appointed interior that is meant to be experienced wide-open,” says Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing – and we definitely have to agree.

The interior is very comfortable and controls are very ergonomically placed. We know we say that about a lot of cars but Infiniti definitely focused their attention on keeping the controls very driver oriented. One thing we didn’t like are the seat-adjusting controls; you basically have to keep the door open to be able to toggle around to adjust your seats to your liking. With the door-closed it’s nearly impossible to mess around with the seat settings.

The $3,050 Premium Package gets you Bluetooth, a Bose sound system with 13-speakers, memory seats, iPod connectivity, advanced climate control, a power-tilt telescopic steering column and automatic dimming rear-view mirror with HomeLink. Opt for the $1,850 Navigation Package and you can enjoy Infiniti’s Hard Drive Navigation System with 7-inch color touch-screen, XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic information, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive with a CompactFlash slot and Infiniti’s Voice Recognition for climate control, audio and navigation. The $1,150 Technology Package adds Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking, Adaptive Front lighting System and Pre-Crash Seat Belts.

We have the Infiniti G37 Convertible until next week so ask us all the questions you’d like and we’ll get them answered for you.
Yes, we know it’s purple; and yes, we know it’s an automatic – but it’s still beautiful. Joining the 2010 GMC Terrain this week in our Weekly-Test Drive is the new 2009 Infiniti G37 S Convertible.

First Impressions: It is one of the most beautiful coupes we’ve seen converted into a convertible. The 2009 G37 Convertible is Infiniti’s direct answer to BMW’s 3-Series Convertible and Lexus’s new IS-C. The hard-top convertible has definitely turned a lot of heads since we picked it up earlier today, especially from the ladies. Of course, that most likely does not mean you will attract girls with a purple convertible; more like girls are attracted to your purple G37 Convertible and can see themselves driving one. The interior is the same exact way you see it on the G37 Coupe, which is ergonomically designed with quality materials. We love the Bose speakers placed in the head rests – but most of all, we love pushing the 3.7L V6 that pumps out 325-hp with a maximum torque of 267 lb-ft. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic with a manual shift mode with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. 0 to 60 mph comes in a whopping 5.3 seconds.

Pricing for the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible starts at $43,850.

As always, stay in touch as we review the car and ask us all the questions you want about the G37 S Convertible. If you want a quicker response send us a Tweet and we’ll reply ASAP.

On a side note – let us know if you think the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible looks better than the BMW 3-Series Convertible or the Lexus IS-C Convertible. Cast your vote in the poll below.

Earlier this summer, I flew down south to take Porsche’s new 2009 911 Carrera 4 with PDK for a 4-hour long test drive from Atlanta, Georgia to Birmingham, Alabama. It was a quick two day trip that concluded with a very technical review of the car and its 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. We decided to contact Porsche for a week-long test-drive of the 911 Carrera S with PDK to see how the car stacks up as an everyday sports car and to offer those of you looking to purchase the car a less technical and a more hands-on review.

“There is no substitute” – the Porsche slogan goes. To be honest – there really isn’t. There are really just two things you need to know about the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S. First, the 3.8L straight 6 now has more power than its predecessor and second, the new 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission puts that power to the road flawlessly.

Exterior:

The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S is no different than the 2009 911 Carrera 4 we drove two months ago – but if you really must make us repeat ourselves, all 2009 911 models see a few minor changes. The most noticeable changes include a new horizontal cover for the BI-XENON headlights and the LED daytime running headlamps. You’ll also notice that all the lighting elements in the back, except for the reversing lamp, have been equipped with LED lighting, and there are now two oval exhaust pipes.

Interior:

So how does spending everyday inside a 2009 911 Carrera S feel? Well, it all depends on what type of person you are. If you’re one that likes a comfortable, smooth and soft ride, than the 911 Carrera S is not for you (you’re better off going for that other Stuttgart automaker; Mercedes-Benz). But if you’re one of those individuals that loves waking up everyday, getting inside your car, smelling that sweet Porsche leather that promises a sporty, firm ride on your commute, then by all means go for the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Of course, you can enjoy those everyday luxury car features such as Bluetooth, a navigation system, iPod connectivity, and cooled and heated seats. Those features and others are all available with the 2009 911 Carrera S but we have no idea why anyone would care. To those of you that think Porsche makes the worst cup holders, well, all we have to say to you is that you’re a true American. What do we mean by that?
Well, the theory goes that, German drivers and German automakers are focused more on driving than eating or drinking. To them driving itself is a privilege that requires paying close attention; unlike Americans that want to be able to multi-task while driving.

The Autobahn has plays a large part in all that. The high speeds driven on the Autobahn require German automakers to concentrate on producing vehicles that focus on high-speed and fuel-efficiency, rather than interior utility. As such, Porsche was one of the first automakers to focus on high-speed stability with features such as tight-steering, a stiff suspension, and high-perfomance brakes . With that in mind, let’s move onto the subject of performance on the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Performance:

Power comes from a new 3.8L direct-injected flat-6 that makes a neck-snapping 385-hp with a maximum torque of 310 lb-ft at 4,000 rpms. The 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission brings the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

When reviewing a PDK Porsche, it’s hard not to talk about the seamless 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The transmission has a split personality – one that allows you to shift gears 60 percent faster than the pervious Triptronic, or put it away and drive your Porsche like a regular automatic. One factor that appealed to us the most was the ease of use of the launch-control feature with the PDK transmission. All you have to do is put the car in Sports Plus mode, hit the PASM Sport button (available as an option), hold down the brake, slam and the gas and you’ll here a little blip. Let go of the brake and you’re ready to take off. If we had the money to buy a Porsche, you better believe we’d wake up every morning and launch-control ourselves to work.

Braking power comes from 4-piston monobloc fixed alloy calipers and ventilated brake discs, which bring the 911 Carrera S to a full stop from 60 mph in 102 ft. Porsche’s Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system is also available as an option.

How does the 2009 911 Carrera S drive when you’re in regular automatic mode? Mostly tamed. Nonetheless, it will still take off when you slam on the accelerator.

For those worried about fuel-economy figures, Porsche says that the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission helps improve fuel-economy by 15 percent. EPA estimated fuel-economy for the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S comes in at 19/26 mpg (city/highway), or 22 mpg combined.

Overall:

Pricing for the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK starts at $91,080. However, if you go for the additional options, like the ventilated seats, Bose audio, navigation, the Sport Chrono package and more – you’re looking at $120,000 sports coupe. But, is it worth it?

If you’re looking for an incredibly quick and aggressive sports car that will hurt your bottom with its firm ride then yes, the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S is for you. However, if you’re looking for a smooth everyday luxury car, then no. But remember one thing. At the end of the day “there is no substitute.”

It was three years ago that Audi released the enormous Q7 and jumped into the SUV market. However, Audi’s been having some difficulty competing with BMW’s X5 and Mercedes-Benz’s GL, mainly because Americans hardly consider Audi when it comes to the luxury segment, and because the Q7 is downright beastly and unappealing.

Last year Audi decided to get a little sensible with the release of the smaller Audi Q5. Not a bad decision seeing as the compact pocket-size SUV segment is considered one of the fastest growing markets in the automotive industry. BMW, which has been competing in the segment since 2003, has done its best to beat the competition to the market and set the standard with the X3. However, shoppers now have a choice between at least 5 compact luxury SUVs in addition to the X3, and we feel it’s safe to say that some of them are better alternatives than the Munich automaker’s compact sports utility, which has yet to see a major transformation since its inception. Acura now offers the RDX, Volvo has the XC60 and Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti offer the GLK and the EX35 respectively. So how does the Q5 stand-up to the competition?

Exterior:

At first glance – the Audi Q5 seems nothing more than a shrunken Q7. It measures 15.19 feet long and 6.17 feet wide and 5.41 feet high – making it sportier than any of its competitors – and sits on Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform), which debuted in the Audi A5.

Stylish headlights and a large single-frame grille dominate the Q5’s front end. Bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights are available as an optional upgrade. From the side, the standard 18-inch wheels and aluminum exterior trim give the Q5 a sleek look. The rear end features stylish tail lamps with a motorized tail gate, which we felt was a clever deception – it looks to be quite wide when closed, but when opened, reveals the narrowest opening in the segment.

Nonetheless, the Audi Q5 is very stylish and sporty looking when compared to the rest of the bunch in the compact luxury SUV segment.

Interior:

Open the driver-side door and all the buttons and gadgets in the interior might frighten you. Our 2009 Audi Q5 3.2 Premium Quatrro with a Prestige Package was fully-loaded with a bunch of options including Audi’s third-generation MMI with 3D navigation with HDD-based Navigation and real-time traffic information, a joystick control, SIRIUS satellite radio, 3-zone climate control, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi’s side assist blind spot protection and much much more. Be aware however, that all those extra options throw the price tag of the Q5 sky-high.

Getting back to Audi’s third-generation MMI system; the feature seemed very confusing at first, but once we got ourselves situated and spent a good half-hour with it, we were blown away. The system is coupled with a high-resolution 800×480 pixel LED backlit 7-inch screen, on which every action is performed with a smooth animation that almost makes you feel like you’re using an Apple product. Most of the function in the MMI system are controlled via a new joystick located on the center knob or voice input. The voice input features allows commands such as “I’m hungry,” “I need money,” “I need gas,” “I need coffee,” and will point you toward the closest relevant locations.

Another MMI option that is a “wow” factor is the 3D navigation; you can use the joystick to navigate to a location on the screen and just point and click for directions.

If you’re not the tech-savvy type you’re going to completely hate everything about the MMI system.

Audi says that the Q5 can comfortably accommodate five individual and we have to agree since the ergonomically designed seats can be flexibly arranged. Available as an option is the “rear bench seat plus”, which slides almost 4-inches lengthwise, provides adequate leg-room for rear-seat passengers. The Q5 also features numerous storage compartments including, drink holders, bottle holders, storage compartments in the trunk and one under the passenger-side footwell.

Performance:

Power for the 2009 Audi Q5 comes courtesy of a 3.2L V6 FSI direct injection making 270-hp with a maximum torque of 243 lb-ft. Mated with a 6-speed Triptronic automatic transmission, the 2009 Q5 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The quattro all-wheel-drive system has a rear-biased torque split of 40/60, which allows for a more sporty drive.

Overall, performance of the Audi Q5 is much better than its competitors, a large part of which is due to its drive-select system that allows you to choose from four different modes including Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and a customized Individual mode. The system tightens up the steering of the car along with the throttle response time, reacting to road conditions or your specifications. Handling of the 2009 Q5 is very nimble and sharp. It tracks accurately around the curves and keeps body-roll in check when you throw it around the corners.

For those worried about fuel-economy figures, Audi says that its Q5 gets an estimated at 18/23 mpg (city/highway). We fluctuated between 18.5 and 19 mpg throughout the week-long test.

The 2009 Audi Q5 also has the best-in-class towing capacity with a total capacity of 4,400 lbs.
- Acura RDX = 1500 lbs
- BMW X3 = 3500 lbs
- Mercedes GLK = 3500 lbs
- Infiniti EX = Towing not recommended
- Volvo XC60 = 3307 lbs

Overall:

After spending four days with the 2009 Audi Q5, we feel that the Audi Q5 has managed to separate itself from its competitors and may give the brand the boost it needs to compete strongly against other luxury brands. A few reasons for that is due to its gorgeous looks inside out, its sporty yet well-composed driving capabilities and the host of luxury features.

Pricing for the 2009 Audi Q5 starts at $37,200. Comparing that to a $39,700 BMW X3, $32,520 Acura RDX, $33,800 Infiniti EX35, the $34,600 Mercedes-Benz GLK and the $33,845 Volvo XC60 – the Q5 feels fairly well-priced. However, the extended list of options and features will run the pricing of the Q5 unreasonably high.

Our test-model was priced at $52,950 as it came with an $11,000 Prestige Package, which includes a Panorama sunroof, Audi xenon plus lights with LEDs, a power tailgate, a garage door opener, heated front seats, Bluetooth, memory seating, 19-inch alloy-wheels with all-season tires, iPod connectivity, Audi advanced key, MMI navigation with cd/dvd player and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. Other options include a $475 Meteor gray pearl effect paint, a $2,950 Audi drive select option and a $500 Audi side assist.

Overall, the Q5 is a very fine SUV, but it is also a very expensive one for those shopping in the compact luxury SUV segment.

For its October issue, Consumer Reports tested six sports cars and coupes to figure out which is the best overall. The test included a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, a Nissan 370Z, a Subaru WRX and Detroit’s Big 3 muscle cars – the 2010 Ford Mustang, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2009 Dodge Challenger.

After running all six through their tests, Consumer Reports picked the 2010 Mustang with an over all rating of Very Good and a road test score of 78. The Mustang beat its other two Detroit rivals – the 2010 Camaro and the 2009 Challenger, which received an overall score of 71 and 53 respectively.

“The Mustang topped this group by delivering strong acceleration, communicative steering, and the most agile handling,” said David Champion, senior director of CR’s Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Ford Mustang Outpoints Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in Consumer Reports Tests of Sports Cars and Coupes

Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Nissan 370Z, and redesigned Subaru WRX get Very Good road test scores

YONKERS, N.Y., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The freshened Ford Mustang outpointed two other reincarnated muscle cars — the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger — as well as the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe in Consumer Reports’ tests of six sporty cars and coupes in the October issue.

The Mustang received a Very Good overall road test score of 78, outpointing the Camaro which received a Very Good 71, and the Challenger, which received a Good 53 points. CR’s engineers found the Mustang’s 2010 freshening makes it an even more balanced and satisfying driver’s car than ever before.

The new Camaro shares basic underpinnings with the Pontiac G8 sedan. The Challenger is based on the large Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger rear-wheel-drive sedans. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe received a Very Good test score and is distinct from the rest of the group. It is loosely based on the Genesis luxury sedan and is powered by either a turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 engine, in contrast to the muscle cars’ V8s.

CR also tested the redesigned Nissan 370Z two-seat coupe, an agile sports car which received a Very Good test score, and the updated and improved 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX, which also received a Very Good test score.

Prices ranged from $38,565 for the 370Z to $26,088 for the WRX. The Mustang has average reliability and is Recommended, as is the WRX. The other models are too new to have reliability data for CR to Recommend them. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Car Reliability Survey of its more than seven million print and web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings of the sporty cars test group appear in the October issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale September 1. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org . Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

In everyday driving, the Mustang corners with agility and the highway ride is civilized. The Ford Mustang GT premium, ($34,725 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested) is powered by a 315-hp, 4.6-liter V8 engine that delivers strong acceleration and gets 20 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The engine has a deep burble that is pleasing to listen to. The five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and accurately. Braking is Very Good. The 2010 freshening brought upgraded interior materials and better fit and finish.

The Camaro provides blistering performance and handles capably, but its girth undermines its agility. The Chevrolet Camaro 2SS ($35,425, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 426-hp, 6.2-liter, V8 engine that delivers very strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The engine sounds great when the throttle is punched. The six-speed manual transmission has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior is nicely finished despite gaps around the instrument panel and some cheap plastics.

With exhilarating straight-line acceleration, a brawny V8, and stock-car styling, the Challenger recaptures the character of the American muscle car. The Dodge Challenger R/T ($36,600, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 370-hp, 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 engine that delivers strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The optional six-speed manual transmission shifts well with a pistol-like grip that fits snugly in hand. Whatever wind and road noise there is, and it’s not much, is overwhelmed by the invigorating engine growl. Braking is mediocre and it has a big car feel rather than a sports car. The well-assembled interior has a nicely padded dash and nostalgic horizontal seat stitching.

The Genesis Coupe has agile handling that makes make it fun to drive, which is unusual for a Hyundai. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring ($28,375, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 306-hp, 3.8-liter V6 engine and gets an impressive 23 mpg overall. The V6 engine smoothly hums under acceleration. However, the interaction of the six-speed manual transmission’s shifter and heavy clutch make it a challenge to get smooth shifts. Braking is very good. The interior is nicely finished, although it’s not luxurious like the Genesis sedan’s.

The WRX’s ride is taut, yet controlled and the car is steady yet compliant on the highway. The Subaru WRX ($26,088, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 265-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers very strong acceleration and gets 24 mpg overall. It’s well matched to a five-speed manual transmission. In everyday driving, the WRX engine has the manners of a typical four-cylinder with mileage to match. Braking is excellent. Interior plastics are all hard, but the interior is well-assembled.

Redesigned for 2009, the two-seat 370Z is shorter and better finished than its predecessor, the 350Z. Great handling and braking are high points of the 370Z, as is abundant power. The cabin is cramped and noisy, it’s hard to see out, and the stiff ride is wearing over time. The Nissan 370Z Touring ($38,565, MSRP as tested), is a real sports car with quick handling and lots of grip. It is powered by a 332-hp, 3.7-liter V6 engine that gets 23 mpg overall, but on premium fuel. The six-speed manual transmission’s short-throw shifter has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior has exceptional fit and finish.

It’s true – less than a year since production commenced on the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe, it has ceased. July 29, 2009 marked the last day of production for General Motors Company’s Boxwood plant in Delaware, which is responsible for making GM’s Kappa-platform, the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and the recently introduced 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe.

The hard-top Solstice Coupe took the 2008 New York Auto Show by storm. The more aggressive and sleeker looking targa-top fastback offers up an alternative for those who aren’t always looking for fun in the sun, but alas, as the rest of the Pontiac faces extinction, so does the Solstice.

“To me, it’s not a celebration,” said James Graves, a 29-year veteran of GM’s Boxwood plant. “It’s a sad day. It’s like a funeral.”

Curb Weight: 3018 lbs
0 to 60 mph: 5.5 seconds
Fuel-Economy: 19/28 mpg city/highway

Exterior:

“The new Solstice coupe has all the design cues and pleasing performance of the original roadster, and is an all-season alternative for people who enjoy open-air driving,” said Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC.

There is no doubt that the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe looks outstanding. Put it on the road next to any other coupe or sportback, and it is sure to attract the lion’s share of the attention. However, despite the dramatic new look, GM says that engineers made minor changes to create a hard-top version of the Solstice. The model features a fixed roof aft the B-piller, complete with side windows and a rear lift-glass providing easy access to the storage compartment behind the seat. The sloping roofline provides the look of a classic fastback, as it runs from the front of the roof and merges with the ever fashionable ducktail style rear spoiler.

The roof, which weighs 31 pounds, can be removed easily by one person – or so GM says. I personally had trouble taking the roof off myself, and not because I’m weak. It was because it is just too big for one person to take off without fear of damaging it. A soft roof-cover is available as an added option though, just in case you get caught with your top down on a rainy day. Gm Accessories also sells a storage case for the removable roof.

Interior:

Not much differs between the Coupe and the Roadster. However, GM did do a little redesigning though in the area behind the seats, providing easy access to the cargo area. It also seems that GM’s engineers couldn’t find place for a cupholder, so they haphazardly placed them behind the headrests.

Interior options include AM/FM and CD stereo with six speakers, an enhanced sound system with an MP3-compatible stereo and an iPod jack, XM Satellite Radio and of course, OnStar.

Our 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP included a two-way power driver seat height adjuster, racing-inspired sport bucket seats with GXP stitching, a leather-wrapped manual shift knob, an adjustable steering wheel, and a rear window defogger. Oh, and while we’re talking about the rear-window, there is a huge issue with rear-visibility, or the lack there of.

Performance:

Based on GM’s Kappa-platform, the rear-wheel-drive 260-hp 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP goes from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds; pretty impressive for its class. The rough 5 speed manual transmission and subpar handling detract from the experience in a big way though.

Our test vehicle, the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP, was powered by a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec that produces 260-hp and a peak torque of 260 lb-ft. Now, when you look at GM’s list of key competitors you might begin to wonder why you would spend $30,375 on this car.

GM says that the base model Solstice targets the Mazda MX-5 Miata and its retractable hardtop, while the Solstice Coupe GXP targets the Nissan 370Z. Why anyone would opt to spend a single dollar on the Solstice when they can pick up a 332-hp 2009 370Z for just over $29,000 is beyond us.

Overall:

So should you be glad the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe is now dead? Well, it all depends on how much you love Pontiac and American cars, because if we had $30,375 to spend on a brand new car, we’d be heading into the Nissan dealership right about now.
