Press Release:

FQ-400 – THE FASTEST AND MOST EXTREME LANCER EVOLUTION EVER RELEASED BY MITSUBISHI MOTORS in the UK

- List price from £49,999
- On sale – June 2009
- The most powerful, accelerative Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X to date
- Peak power of 403bhp @ 6,500rpm; peak torque of 525Nm @ 3,500rpm
- 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds (est.); top speed 155mph (electronically limited)

The tenth version of Mitsubishi’s iconic Lancer Evolution models has a new performance flagship model to top its range, the FQ-400.

Extreme Evolution
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 is the fastest and most extreme version of Mitsubishi’s motorsport derived machine. With 403bhp and 387lb.ft of torque on offer from its advanced, lightweight aluminium 2.0-litre turbocharged MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) petrol engine the FQ-400 is able to reach 62mph from standstill in an estimated 3.8 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 155mph – where permitted.

Traction and handling
Ensuring all the FQ-400’s power is put to good use is Mitsubishi’s sophisticated Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel-drive system which appropriates power to the wheels that can best use it, giving the FQ-400 quite sensational cross-country performance.

The S-AWC system combines a number of electronic systems that both enhance the FQ-400’s performance and safety, with Active Stability Control and Active Centre Differential, Active Yaw Control and Sport ABS giving the FQ-400 incredible cornering ability, traction and grip. Depending on the conditions the driver can select the most suitable set-up for the S-AWC system, three choices – Tarmac, Gravel and Snow – being offered via the wheel-mounted button and displayed in the central instrument binnacle.

Cornering stability
Increasing the FQ-400’s cornering ability even further over its FQ relatives is a wider track and lowered suspension featuring Eibach springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers. Lightweight 18-inch, nine spoke alloy wheels fitted with Toyo Proxes R1R tyres enhance the FQ-400’s grip, giving it sharper cornering response on the road and more incisive steering. The enhanced agility and performance is backed by a revised braking system which uses aerospace grade aluminium alloys and floating sealed discs grabbed by high performance pads.

Extreme Power
To achieve the incredible 403bhp from just 2.0-litres Mitsubishi has had to significantly revise the FQ-400’s advanced powerplant. Motorsport specification high-flow fuel injectors are fitted to the aluminium cylinder head and a new hybrid turbocharger is also fitted. The higher specification turbocharger features low-friction bearings, a high temperature turbine and strengthened thrust bearing to increase response and reduce turbo lag. Feeding the turbocharger cooled air, improving its performance and efficiency, is an enhanced intercooler, while the exhaust’s gasses flow from the engine via a 3-inch diameter high flow stainless steel piping and catalytic convertor before exiting through a centrally positioned exhaust.

Mitsubishi has remapped the Engine Control Unit (ECU) extensively with over 500 hours of development time to allow its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to not just produce its exceptional output but to do so with excellent driveability. The FQ-400’s acceleration is sensational, it pulling hard through the gears regardless of engine revs. With peak torque of 387lb.ft on offer from just 3,500rpm, the FQ-400 is just as able to trickle through town traffic as it is taking a rally special stage.

A ‘nod’ to the Evo VI
The FQ-400 looks every bit the rally refugee too, giving a strong ‘nod’ to the styling cues of the legendary Evolution VI, and builds on the already aggressive style of its Lancer Evolution X FQ relatives.

A heavily vented bonnet helps heat escape from the FQ-400’s turbocharged engine and a new lightweight composite front bumper incorporating Mitsubishi’s trademark ‘Jet Fighter’ grille features carbon-fibre elements on its leading edges. Additional lighting and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights mark out the FQ-400’s nose, its added aggressiveness further enhanced by a 30mm drop in front ride height. Composite side skirts, a re-styled rear bumper with a carbon fibre diffuser, a rear wing incorporating a gurney strip and a roof-mounted ‘Vortex Generator’ all help manage airflow and cooling.

Behind the 18-inch lightweight, nine spoke alloy wheels it’s possible to see the Alcon brakes on the front, while the Toyo Proxes R1R tyres underline the FQ-400’s potency with their aggressive ‘cut slick’ tread pattern. Inside, the driver is held tightly against the FQ-400’s sensational accelerative, braking and cornering forces in Recaro bucket sports seats, the range-topping Lancer Evolution X also gaining an FQ-400 liveried handbrake handle and carbon fibre gearknob.

No compromise
Despite its obvious focus the FQ-400’s suspension offers compliance thanks to the Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers, the FQ-400’s usefulness as a daily driver not compromised overly thanks to Mitsubishi’s chassis tuning. The stiff bodywork not only provides an exceptionally rigid platform for the suspension to work, but excellent crash-worthiness, the Lancer Evolution X attaining a five-star score in Euro NCAP’s independent crash tests. The FQ-400’s S-AWC and its incorporated stability, traction and braking systems helping avoid an accident in the first place. Even so there’s reassurance of seven airbags, seat belt pretensioners and ISO Fix child seating all included in its standard specification.

Fully loaded
Standard equipment for the range-topping Lancer Evolution X model is comprehensive, the FQ-400 coming with Bluetooth hands-free telephone connection, a CD-tuner with 30 Gig hard drive, DVD satellite navigation and privacy glass. Convenience features like remote central locking, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers increase the FQ-400’s ease of use, the huge performance it offers not coming at the expense of usefulness. Like its Lancer Evolution X relatives it features comfortable seating for five as well as a usefully sized boot, the FQ-400 bringing all the convenience of the standard saloon car it’s based upon – but with explosive performance potential.

Setting the standard
Standard it’s not though, instead the FQ-400 is a standard setter, with performance that’s the measure of any rival and many exotic sports and supercars costing many multiples of its £49,999 list price. Available from June 2009, the FQ-400 is covered by a three year / 36,000 mile warranty.

The 2008 Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder made its U.S. debut in April at the 2008 New York Auto Show. We were lucky enough to be invited out by Porsche last week to take the new Boxster RS 60 Spyder, which pays tribute to the 1960 Type 718 RS 60 Spyder, around the Barber Motorsports Park track in Birmingham, Alabama.

Only 1,960 units of the 2008 Boxster RS 60 Spyder will be built; which coincides with the 1960 12-Hours of Sebring won by the 550 Spyder Type 718 RS 60. However, only 800 of those will make it over to the U.S. with prices starting at $64,900. Now you’re probably wondering if the extra $9,200 over the Boxster S (which starts at $55,700) is worth the ‘R’, ‘60′ and the ‘Spyder’ badging on the back.

Click through to read more and for the full image gallery.

What are you paying extra for?

Well on the outside you get the GT Silver Metallic paint work, a red convertible top, 19-inch alloy wheels and umm - that’s about it. On the inside, you pay for the beautiful Carrera Red leather interior (which we couldn’t get enough of) along with a plaque on the dashboard that reminds you that you own one of 1,960 limited edition models. Other than that you get a ‘RS 60 Spyder’ kick plate, body color paint work on the rear seat and a $700 sexy gear-shift knob that reminded us of Iron Man.

Do I get extra performance for the extra cash?

Now don’t be confused here. The ‘RS’ badging on the back doesn’t mean you get a super high-performing, lightweight version of the Boxster S as in the case of the 911 GT3 RS. However, you do get an extra 8-hp for a total of 303-hp which Porsche says comes courtesy of some ‘engine management upgrades’ and a sports exhaust system.

Driving both the Boxster RS 60 Spyder and the Boxster S around the Barber Motorsports Park track, we barely felt any difference between the two other than the brilliant sound of the sports exhaust system. Like the regular Boxster S, the performance of the RS 60 Spyder is just sensational. The steering and handling is very crisp along with very responsive acceleration. However, an additional $9,200 is very high price to pay (at least for us). You don’t really need to spend that much to get the best Boxster.

But of course, if you have the money and you can’t get over the Carrera Red leather interior, the sound of the sports exhaust and want to have the bragging rights to own one of the 1960 units of a limited edition Boxster; the RS 60 Spyder is worth every additional penny.

Chrysler has told its dealers that it will raise prices by 2 percent for most of the remaining 2008 models. The price increase, which will start today, will be carried over to the 2009 models. According to executives, the price increase comes from the rise in prices for commodities such as steel.

“The average 2 percent increase brings total model year price increases in line with key competitors,” said Chrysler spokesman Stuart Schorr. “It does not affect vehicles already in dealer inventory. Incentives would not be changed.”

Schorr said that at the beginning of the 2008 model year, Chrysler put an average increase of $1,200 worth of content per vehicle without raising prices.

“All manufacturers including us have taken small incremental price increases after the launch of the model year,” he added. “The cumulative impact is that with our increase we are bringing the total model year increase in line with our key competitors.”

Press Release:

Advanced MR Offers More Technology than Traditional Entry-Level GSR Model

CYPRESS, CA, May 21, 2008 –

On the heels of the successful introduction of the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR, Mitsubishi Motors announces the availability of the more technologically-advanced 2008 Lancer Evolution MR, the newest and most sophisticated version of the model series that began 16 years ago.

Shown coming off the production line in Japan, the Lancer Evolution MR arrives at showrooms in the U.S. in June and is available for a suggested retail price of $38,290. The MR features more user technology and a broader market appeal than the entry level GSR, including an advanced 6-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission.

The Lancer Evolution MR is available with an optional technology package for $40,840 that includes a 30GB hard drive navigation system with music server, 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate Premium Sound System, pre-paid Sirius Satellite Radio capability and FAST Key entry, which allows passive vehicle unlocking and engine start/stop simply by carrying the remote control and grasping the handle.

“The introduction of the 2008 Lancer Evolution MR with TC-SST gives us an opportunity to expand upon the existing Evolution customer base,” said Dan Kuhnert, executive vice president of sales and marketing for MMNA. “The added capability and functionality of the new Lancer Evolution vehicles make them a more viable option for everyday driving, while maintaining the rally-inspired heritage that has made the series a global performance car icon.”

Both 2008 Lancer Evolution models will be on display at the 2008 Mitsubishi Owner’s Day taking place in Cypress, CA on July 19, 2008.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is the rally-inspired version of the company’s Lancer economy car. It packs a strong turbocharged engine in a compact package, making it quite fast. The “Evo,” as it’s called, has grown up recently, and its raw performance has been refined to make it more functional for daily driving.

Performance

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is available in GSR and MR versions. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine generates nearly 300 horsepower. A five-speed close-ratio manual gearbox is standard on the GSR trim level with a six-speed dual-clutch sequential-shift transmission coming exclusively in the top-performing MR model; it can either operate in automatic mode or be taken through the gears manually via magnesium steering wheel-mounted paddles.

Riding on a longer wheelbase and a wider track with better front-to-rear weight distribution for added handling prowess, the current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution includes a long list of chassis control features for added stability. Its Super-All Wheel Control dynamic handling all-wheel-drive system incorporates an Active Center Differential, Active Yaw Control rear differential a limited-slip front differential, and Active Stability Control to send the proper amount of power to each wheel for maximum grip and control across a wide range of conditions and driving situations.

The current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution’s lightweight aluminum suspension delivers a less tumultuous ride than in past models, which Mitsubishi says makes it more amenable as a daily driver. Those who pine for flat-out aggressiveness and are willing to sacrifice ride quality will want to choose the MR version, which offers assorted handling upgrades. These include heavy-duty shock absorbers, springs, and enhanced two-piece brake rotors. Oversized 18-inch wheels and tires are standard across the line, with the MR adding BBS forged alloy wheels.

Exterior

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is visually distinguished from the rest of the Lancer sedan lineup primarily in its bolder front-end styling that incorporates large chrome air intakes and engine heat outlets with a sharply sloping hood. An oversized rear spoiler is standard on the MR and optional on the GSR.

Interior

Inside, heavily bolstered Recaro sport seats integrate side-impact airbags; head curtain airbags for both rows of seats and a knee-height airbag for the driver are also included. Both versions of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution offer a long list of standard amenities, with noteworthy options including a premium Rockford Fosgate audio system, a navigation system with hard-disk digital audio storage, and a keyless entry/start system.
Is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution for You?

Buy the Lancer Evolution if
You want a rally-ready car for aggressive street driving or recreational racing, or just like the idea of having a quick and nimble pocket rocket.

Keep Looking if
Something more practical and more conservatively cast better fits your personality; you prefer more muscle or a svelte sports coupe.

Who Fits?
Front seat passengers will find ample head, shoulder, and legroom, while rear riders might feel cramped, particularly if they’re sitting behind two six-footers.

Following the Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro, here is another reminder that the Europeans are much luckier than us here on the stateside. Ready to go on sale at dealerships across Great Britain on May 1, Ford today announced the new look for the turbocharged flagship Ford Focus ST.

The new 2008 Ford Focus ST is powered by a 2.5L turbocharged 5-cylinder Duratec engine that pumps out 223-hp. The Focus ST goes from rest to 62mph in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 150mph. According to Ford, this Focus ST set a segment-leading record time of 8:35 seconds around the Nordschleife circuit at the Nurburgring.

Prices for the 2008 Ford Focus ST range from £18,250 – £20,850. Yes we’re pissed and we eagerly await the arrival of our next-generation Focus which will be the first global product from Ford meaning we’ll get this look and the C1 platform on U.S. roads by 2010. Hey Ford, can we get the Focus RS as well?

Press Release:

FORD FOCUS ON PERFORMANCE

* New look for turbocharged flagship Focus ST
* Upgraded interior with premium features
* Priced from £18,250 – £20,850
* Created by Ford TeamRS division

BRENTWOOD, Essex, April 28, 2008 – Fast, fun and fabulously good looking, a new version of Ford’s performance flagship Focus goes on sale at dealerships across Great Britain from May 1.

Created by Ford TeamRS, the company’s dedicated performance vehicle arm, the 2008 Focus ST benefits from the new exterior and interior styling changes introduced across the rest of the Focus line-up earlier this year. Importantly though, while offering new technologies and features, the car’s well-honed dynamics remain untouched.

At the heart of the matter is the familiar 225 PS, 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder Duratec engine. Powerful, and accompanied by a suitably sporty soundtrack, this powerhouse delivers a potential 150mph top speed in tandem with 0-62mph acceleration in just 6.8 seconds.

Indeed, as a measure of this car’s ability, a standard production Focus ST set a segment-leading record time of 8 minutes 35 seconds around the Nordschleife circuit at the famed Nürburgring.

This sort of achievement requires more than just brute power and the Focus ST remains one of the sharpest handling cars in its class. In fact, the ST may well be the definitive choice for enthusiastic drivers who also demand comfort around town and an array of subtle suspension enhancements ensures this is still the case.

A powerful braking system is top of this list while Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and Traction Control are now standard on all versions.

The Focus ST has always provided lots of choice and the range retains its simple ST, ST-2 and ST-3 trim grades and three or five-door hatchback bodystyles. It is priced from £18,250 – £20,850.

Every Focus ST boasts 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, sports styling, body-hugging Recaro sports seats, a unique sports steering wheel and upgraded instrumentation. New to this generation of ST are the ‘Ford Power’ starter button and Easyfuel capless refuelling system. Upgrading to ST-2 adds a Sony audio system, bi-xenon lights, LED rear lights and Quickclear heated windscreen while the ST-3 includes an in-dash six CD player plus full leather trim.

In common with other members of the 2008 Focus family, a range of high-tech options can be specified. Among the list is a Tyre Deflation Detection System, a new audio connectivity module for external devices like Bluetooth, voice control and navigation systems plus various infotainment options including an affordable sat nav system with SD card slot.

Combining bold looks with a thrilling driving experience and numerous new features, Ford’s new and improved Focus ST is the definitive hot hatch.

Press Release:

Introduction

The new BMW M3 Convertible, the third derivative and concluding chapter in the current M3 line-up, adds a new dimension to the BMW M ownership experience.

Not only is the new open-topped M3 the first M car to feature a Retractable Hard-Top, it’s the first M3 Convertible to be powered by a V8 engine and the first BMW to feature an all-new seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual gearbox.

Although it possesses the same 4.0-litre, 420hp V8 engine as its M3 Coupé and M3 Saloon siblings, the fourth-generation M3 Convertible is very much a model in its own right. It has been designed from the ground up to be a four-seat convertible with supercar performance that showcases market-leading technology.

BMW M3 Convertible (manual gearbox)
Power (Hp) 420 Torque (Nm) 400 Zero to 62mph 5.3 Combined mpg 21.9 Emissions (g/km) 309 Price OTR £54,760

BMW M3 Convertible (with M DCT gearbox)
Power (Hp) 420 Torque (Nm) 400 Zero to 62mph 5.1 Combined mpg 23.0 Emissions (g/km) 293 Price OTR £57,350

The new M3 Convertible produces more than twice the power of the original 1988 model, yet the spirit and design philosophy remains the same. With outputs of 420hp and 400 Nm, and following the precedent set by its forebears, the M3 Convertible engine comfortably breaks the all-important 100hp per litre barrier. What’s more, the new model has a power to weight ratio that is over 10 per cent higher than the outgoing E46 M3 Convertible – itself the previous benchmark open-top sports convertible.

EfficientDynamics at the performance end of the market
The new M3 Convertible is both more fuel efficient and produces less C02 than its predecessor, despite this breathtaking performance. The introduction of BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme – which features Brake Energy Regeneration, Optimum Shift Indicator and lightweight materials – ensures that both running costs and emissions are kept to a minimum. The M3 Convertible returns 21.9 mpg on the combined cycle – a five per cent improvement over the previous generation model.

Transmission champ
A new option for all M3 buyers is BMW’s new seven-speed M DCT gearbox. Offering drivers the chance to enjoy seamless gearshifts with no interruption in power delivery, this state-of-the-art transmission is so efficient that it outperforms the manual gearbox car in terms of acceleration, fuel economy and emissions.

Lifting the lid
The new BMW M3 Convertible is the first M car to feature a Retractable Hard-Top as standard. The electro-hydraulic roof is fully automatic and can be lowered in
22 seconds. The M3 Convertible is fitted with SunReflective leather, allowing owners to leave the top down for extended periods without the risk of the seat leather overheating. With SunReflective leather, which was initially developed by BMW Motorrad to keep motorbike riders cool in hot climes, the surface temperature remains up to 20 degrees Celsius lower than conventional leather.

Chassis
Underneath the M3 Convertible’s muscular torso lies a chassis and suspension system tailor-made for the demanding requirements of an open-top car. Torsional rigidity has been significantly improved over the previous model, while the suspension has been fine-tuned to take into account the specific weight distribution of a convertible.

Safety
The combination of a strong structure and advanced occupant restraint systems means the BMW M3 Convertible offers the highest possible standards of passive and active safety for occupants. Like the standard 3-Series Convertible, the M3 version is equipped with a rollover sensor system that constantly monitors the vertical and horizontal movement of the car. If the sensors (which are located in the centre of the car, on the B pillars and in the doors) detect that a rollover is imminent, roll bars located behind the rear headrests pop up. At the same time, the front seatbelt pre-tensioners are activated and the head/thorax airbags are deployed.

Klaus Kibsgaard, the new Managing Director of BMW (UK) Ltd, said: “To be stepping into BMW’s third largest market just as brand shapers such as M3s and the X6 are launched is a rare treat. Throughout my time at BMW I have been aware of the strong lure that the M badge has on our UK customers. This latest car underscores our competitive advantage in the market place. It is the only performance car of its type to feature innovations such as energy saving technology and a folding metal roof.

“I believe the M3 Convertible is a sublime product and one of the best from M. It will be hugely satisfying for both our existing M3 Convertible owners looking to buy the new generation as well as prospects who, as yet, have not had the pleasure of hearing an M engine on full song.”

Market
The M3 Convertible goes on sale in the UK on 26 April 2008, priced at £54,760 OTR. BMW expects to sell approximately 900 M3 Convertibles in a full year. This compares to 1,900 M3 Coupés and 400 M3 Saloons.

This supercar is built on a modified Maserati platform, adds a new 4.7-liter V8 derived from Ferrari’s technology, and wraps it all in a tantalizing carbon-fiber body. The result is a sports car capable of doing 185 miles per hour with sparkling Italian character and sound, but one that’s refreshingly distinct from a typical Ferrari or Maserati. It will cost somewhere between $200,000 and $250,000 when it goes on sale in the United States this year.

Only 500 Alfa 8C Competizione coupes will be built, followed by a limited batch of Spider convertibles. Of those 500 coupes, 90 or so are bound for the U.S. The 8C will be sold through special Alfa brand ambassadors and serviced at Maserati dealerships.

We had the rare opportunity to drive the 8C at Alfa’s Belocca test track in northern Italy, near the Maserati factory in Modena, which has already begun crafting the 8C alongside the Maserati GranTurismo.

Other Alfa Romeo models likely to be sold in the United States starting late in 2009 include updated versions of the Brera coupe and Spider convertible currently on sale overseas.

Exterior

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was first shown as a concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt auto show. A panel of top international auto designers named the final version the world’s best production design of 2006.

The 8C was designed by former Alfa Romeo design chief Wolfgang Egger, who now heads Audi’s design studios. The car’s styling pays homage to classic Alfas, including the rare Type 33 Stradale of 1967.

From its V-shaped hood to its sensuous flanks, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is a beautifully expressive yet understated sports car. It smartly avoids the brutal styling of some modern supercars that makes them appear more like modified racers than cars for real drivers on real roads.

The 8C Competizione is built on a shortened version of the platform that underpins the Maserati GranTurismo and Quattroporte. Nearly half of the Alfa’s total mass is lightweight, pricey carbon fiber, including the body, dashboard, interior door panels, and seat frames — the last weigh just 22 pounds each. Lifting the slim hood reveals rough, bare carbon fiber on its underside.

The 8C is a so-called mid-engine design, meaning the engine sits largely behind the driver but in front of the rear axle. Weight is concentrated low and in the center of the car to promote quick steering and balanced handling.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione rides on huge 20-inch cast aluminum wheels shod with Pirelli high-performance tires. An optional set of ultra-light wheels saves nearly 6 pounds of weight at each corner. Buyers can choose a Quadrifoglio emblem for the fender, the four-leaf clover that once designated racing Alfas.

Interior

For an idea of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione’s cost-is-no-object approach to design, consider the central panel in the cabin: It starts as a single, 230-pound block of aluminum, then it’s whittled down to what is essentially an 11-pound sculpture.

The 8C’s cabin combines a performance-first approach with top materials and details. The dashboard is a single piece of carbon fiber. Body-enveloping racing seats are wrapped in rich and fragrant leather and come in a wealth of colors (make ours red) and patterns, including a particularly handsome woven design. Another seat pattern, of ribbed leather tubes, is called “cannelloni” (yes, like the pasta).

The steering wheel’s diameter seemed overly large at first, but that sensation soon wore off as I toggled the attached paddles to shift the transmission.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione’s rear hatch, its frame also made of carbon fiber, opens on a generous cargo area. Fitted luggage by Italy’s Schedoni is a must.

Alfa Romeo officials scoffed at the idea of cupholders, but buyers can at least opt for a handsome leather case that fits snugly into the hatch and holds upright three bottles of wine.

It might seem like nitpicking to complain about the audio system, but as in most high-end Italian cars, the stereo looks and sounds like a cheap aftermarket unit.

Performance

Hitting the start button on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is the first clue to its beating heart: a new, 4.7-liter V8 with 450 horsepower, courtesy of Ferrari’s engineering artisans. But in contrast to the reedy tenor note of a Ferrari, Alfa Romeo engineers labored to create a distinctively deep, crackling baritone.

That burbling, backfiring sound proved an endless delight on the drizzly Belocca track. The V8 revs like mad to 7,500 rpm, spurring the Alfa from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds — a bit slower than, say, a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano or Porsche 911 GT2, but still flying. A launch-control setting allows the Alfa to smoke its tires for perfect, computer-aided starts.

The six-speed, Formula One-style automated manual transmission has been steadily improved from its earlier incarnations on Ferrari and Maserati models. It’s still makes the car lurch in full automatic mode, but flicking the paddle shifters produces snappy gear changes. Downshifts are accompanied by a quick, automatic blip of the throttle.

Pressing the cabin’s sport button cuts shift times in half, opens a valve in the two-stage exhaust to amp up that amazing sound, sharpens the throttle response, and shifts the stability control system to a freewheeling competition mode.

That stability control system is among the smartest and slickest that we’ve tested: Even on a track slick with rain, it let us keep feeding in power even as the car drifted through turns. The system allowed a surprising amount of slip and slide before it intervened, yet it would finally step in decisively to prevent an embarrassing skid off the track.

The Alfa’s enormous, trusty brakes include six-piston caliper discs up front, four-piston units in the rear. Ceramic brakes are optional — they’re often used on race cars because the material’s superior heat dissipation allows longer, better brake performance under extreme driving conditions.

If the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione has an Achilles’ heel, it’s a shortage of fingertip feedback through the steering wheel. A typical Ferrari or Porsche transmits a more secure sensation at the helm, though that impression might have improved on a drier track.

With its ferocious engine, balanced layout, double-wishbone suspension, and super-quick steering, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione delivers supercar performance. Its pedigree includes a level of exclusivity that’s far beyond most six-figure sports cars.

But acquiring an Alfa 8C Competizione isn’t a matter of writing the fattest check: The company will only offer them to buyers it selects, meaning people who are true Alfisti, as Alfa zealots are known. Alfa wants the 8C in the hands of buyers with a history of loving and collecting Alfa Romeos, as opposed to speculators interested only in flipping the car to turn a fast buck.

Is the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione for You?

Buy this Car if:
Only the most exclusive exotic car can satisfy your speed craving; you’re so well-connected with Alfa Romeo, the car’s brand ambassadors come looking for you.

Look Elsewhere if:
You’ve never owned a high-end Italian car, which means you won’t be considered for an 8C anyway.

Who Fits?
A driver, passenger, and custom-fitted Schedoni luggage.

Closest Competitors
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano; Lamborghini Murcielago LP640; Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren; Porsche 911 GT2

Did you know…
A watershed moment for Alfa Romeo in the United States came in 1967, when Dustin Hoffman drove the then-new Duetto Spider in “The Graduate.” Moviegoers went crazy for the spunky two-seat convertible, which Alfa continued to sell here into the 1990s.

Press Release:

2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition: Return of a Classic

DETROIT – While all Saab Convertibles are popular among car aficionados, owning one in yellow is an extra sunny experience. The first-ever yellow version of the Saab Convertible, issued in 1991, now enjoys collector car status, just as well-kept copies of the 1997 version are starting to get equally sought after. Yet for those preferring the attractions of an all-new open Saab, the third time may be the charm. This spring, yellow is back in a limited edition that is unprecedented in the current generation Saab Convertible – without a doubt, a future classic.

The Saab Convertible Yellow Edition is based on the 2.0T version, its turbocharged four-cylinder combining spirited performance with excellent fuel economy. In addition to its Lynx Yellow paint and a long list of standard equipment, including XM radio and OnStar, this special edition features Aero look items such as 17-inch, five spoke alloy wheels and a subtle, yet effective rear spoiler while the premium audio system will be music to all ears. The 2008 Saab Convertible Yellow Edition has a MSRP of $ 42,830, including destination charges.

Saab pioneered the concept of a ‘four season, four-seater’ soft top with the launch of the first Saab Convertible in 1986, which was initially exclusively sold in the United States and immediately created a cult following. Now in its third-generation, the Saab Convertible leverages more than two decades of experience in designing an open-top car that is as practical as it is stylish and safe.

The current Saab 9-3 Convertible has a level of structural integrity, build quality and running refinement that places it at the very top of its class. Like the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi, the Saab 9-3 Convertible was named a “2008 Top Safety Pick” by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, following its first-ever crash tests for open cars last year.

The Convertible’ DynaCage system helps provide rollover protection with pop-up rear roll bars, strengthened A-pillars and sills, and automatic seat-belt pre-tensioning. Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR) are fitted to the front seats as standard to help counter the risk of neck injury in rear-end impacts.

Innovative product features further develop the Saab concept that an open-top car should be ‘more than a Convertible’ by offering effective transport all the year round. Saab ‘ReAxs’, a unique rear wheel steer characteristic in the kinematics of the suspension, contributes to the responsive chassis dynamics, as does the reinforcement of the front, rear and side structures to compensate for the absence of a fixed roof.

On the road, the Convertible delivers all the fun-to-drive qualities of the widely-acclaimed 9-3 Sport Sedan chassis. The all-turbo powertrain line-up is led by a 2.8-liter V6 rated at 255 hp in the Aero model, while the 210 hp 2.0-liter four cylinder shines with great fuel economy.

Scandinavian design ensures the styling is clean and flowing. This is an open-top car that looks like a unique model in its own right, free from any awkward styling compromises – regardless whether the top is down, or up.

The hydraulically-powered, triple layer roof automatically latches to the windshield header and deploys just 20 seconds, making it among the fastest in its class. The innovative CargoSET function connects the roof operation to a flexible, ‘concertina’ storage well in the trunk. When the roof is up, the well automatically retracts, releasing useful stowage space.

The interior shares the cockpit feel and driver-focused themes of the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi. Particular emphasis was placed on styling that integrates the rear passenger area, including a light colored, near seamless headlining that gives a fixed-head interior ambience. A U-shaped, Surround Trim extends from the base of A-pillars along the top of the doors, rear side trims and tonneau cover, further integrating the interior and exterior.
For ease of use and convenient rear access, the Saab Convertible front seats have an extended travel and integrated seat-belts, which eliminates the need for attachment to the B-pillar. Other interior features include profiler personalization of cabin functions as well as Night Panel ‘need to know’ instrument illumination.
