Report: More details arise surrounding potential GT3 RS version of the Porsche 911 GT3

Automobile reports on some new details regarding the incoming uber-911 known as the GT3 RS, which is expected to start appearing in showrooms in the second half of 2014.

Many diehard 911 enthusiasts have been complaining that Porsche is slowly phasing out their use of the manual transmission, particularly in their more track and performance oriented variants. And this is simply because the automated PDK twin-clutch cog swapper is just physically faster than any human can shift by hand and foot.

And with the serious 911s geared towards breakneck speeds and track times, this understandable because at this point, manuals are only kept around solely for perpetuating the feeling of driver involvement.

The story remains the same with the new GT3 RS—no manual cog swapper, only Porsche’s PDK unit will be available.

Automobile says to expect more liberal use of carbon fiber to help reduce the weight even more. One of the parts to be changed over to the lightweight material is the car’s roof, which Porsche designed specifically to be easily modifiable from the factory.

Engine specifics are unknown, but predictions for a 4.0L flat-six are in the mix, but money can also be bet on the incoming GT3’s 3.8L unit, complete with a series of upgrades for more power.
