Report: Mazda files patent for new 400hp rotary engine

Despite the fact that Mazda introduced an RX Vision Concept to show that they’re not giving up on the prospect, great uncertainty still looms as to whether or not the production version could happen.

If it’s any consolation for Mazda RX fans, the United States Patent and Trademark Office received a filing for a new rotary engine with around 400hp, according to CARandDRIVER.

So this potentially validates the possibility of a next-generation RX sports car, just a tiny tad.

Of course, patent filings should be taken with a grain of salt since they’re often discovered and leaked to the web. Well, not really leaked since patent filings are technically public record.

But the point being is that patent filings often are just false leads and leave you pissing into the wind since patents are filed all the time for new prospects, to act as “product reservations” if you must. Though not all patents are acted upon and often expire, disappearing into nothing.

Regardless, the patent says the new rotary has a completely new design from the ground up. This patent design has a top-mounted turbocharger with high-mounted exhaust ports–a placement different than previous rotaries. There are new fuel injectors mounted closer to the combustion chamber, and the tri-angle rotors have been completely reworked.

Still, this patent filing for a new rotary must be taken very carefully.
