2016 Detroit Preview: BMW announces official world-premiere of the M2 and X4 M40i at the NAIAS

BMW candidly announced to be premiering the hot-new M2 Coupe and the X4 M40i crossover at the first worldly auto show of 2016, in the cold frozen hell of the upper-midwest, right in the heart of Detroit.

Set for the second week of January, the 2016 North American International Show will be the chosen location to reveal the BMW M2 Coupe and the X4 M40i crossover side-by-side, for the world to see in the flesh for the first time ever.

Accompanying the M2 and new X4, and BMW’s senseless nomenclature, is the newest X1, 7-Series, and the BMW 330e from the Los Angeles Auto Show.

As a refresher, hot new M2 coupe is ready to follow in the burn out and drift tracks of the former beloved 1-Series M Coupe, but it’ll also be made more available than the original 1-Series M Coupe. Posing as basically a micro BMW M4, the M2 sports a similar 3.0L TwinPower turbocharged inline-six as the M4, but with 365hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, compared to the M4’s 425hp and 406 lb-ft.

The X4 M40i just matches up with the BMW 3-Series’ upper-tier 340i’s naming theme as it succeeds the 335i. In the case of the X4, the name is being changed from the xDrive35i to the M40i.
