Video: Petrolicious highlights the beauty of form following function with a Mercedes 280SL and a house

Petrolicious loves to go ham with its videos of classic cars and their owners’ stories.

With this latest installment, the outlet highlights the beauty of the virtue of form following function, with a creatively designed house that also has a function, and a car made from a company who helped pioneer this very virtue in the automobile industry: Mercedes-Benz.

Old Mercedes-Benz’s were primarily designed to be functional. For instance, their unique exterior shapes were designed solely for aerodynamics and safety as they pioneered features such as crumple and deformation zones for collisions. Another signature highlight of older model Mercedes-Benzes was their rippled taillights and turn signals–they were designed that way not just for looks, but because the rippled design mitigated the build-up of dirt or snow that would inhibit their luminescence.

All in all, form following function also highlights attention to detail. And this W113 280SL being highlighted in the feature car represents this epitome with Mercedes-Benz at their prime.
