Video: Watch BMW highlight the 5-Series that gave birth to the M5–the M535i
BMW recently decided to highlight one of their most important cars ever in their history and the history of the automobile.
We now know it as the M5, but the M5 wasn’t always the M5 and when it surfaced as part of the world’s first generation of 5-Series, the E12, from 1972-1984, it took the world by storm.
The BMW M535i was first introduced as a “Motorsports” inspired version of the 5-Series, given BMW’s at the time success with their M racing team. It featured some subtle bodywork changes and 14-inch alloy wheels, along with Recaro seats and an M sport steering wheel.
Power was provided by the famous M30 3.5L straight-six good for around 220hp, enabling the M535i to zip past 62 mph in just 7.5 seconds.
