Report: The next BMW 6-Series to compete directly with Porsche 911

BMW seems to realize that it needs to bring back it performance street cred as Car reports Munich might be shifting their aim once again back to the Porsche 911, with the BMW 6-Series.

The next generation model is said to surface in 2017 with the internally coded G15 model. A massive 500lbs diet is expected to bring the curb weight to 3,450lbs, versus the current models rating of around two tons large. There wasn’t any indication for estimates regarding the 6-Series Gran Coupe, however, a diet is still expected for that model as well.

The weight savings come compliments of extensive use of carbon fiber and high-strength steel with aluminum bits, as well as some use of titanium and magnesium. xDrive is expected to transfer over, as well as the usual six- and eight-cylinder engines. The typical 3.0L turbocharged inline affair is on order to produce around 347hp while a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 should churn out 476hp with the M6 readying 600hp.
