Report: Volvo plans to expand, could introduce a new subcompact crossover

Volvo is continuing with their product overhaul, first initiated by the 2015 XC90. It is then expected to be followed by a third generation Volvo S80, now renamed to the S90.

The rest of Volvo’s lineup, such as the XC60, the S60, V60, and the V40 should follow. But in that mix, there will be an apparent addition.

Volvo supposedly confirmed to AutoCar in the UK that a new smaller crossover is in the works and should be named the XC40. This rumor first showed up in 2013.

AutoCar spoke with Volvo’s spokesman, Hakan Samuelsson, who said “a small SUV is very high on our wish list,” essentially confirming such a model is in the works.

The new XC40 is being designed from Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture, developed in collaboration with Geely and ultimately, the plan is to have the XC40 double Volvo’s yearly sales.
