Mazdaspeed3 fans can get excited–AutomotiveNews recently heard of a new next-generation Mazdaspeed3, currently in the works as a 2016 model year. The current Mazda3 launched last year and the new Mazdaspeed version should be around when the current 3 gets a mid-cycle refresh in about two years.
The second generation Mazdaspeed3 ceased production in 2013 and was a popular item by enthusiasts. Though it had its quirks, like insufferable torque steer from just having a 2.3L turbo-four shove all its ponies to the front-wheels, the Mazdaspeed3 was an awesome hot hatch clearly designed with the driver in mind. And we loved it.
According to AN, the next model could utilize all-wheel drive to make extra grip for over 300hp from a new SKYACTIV 2.5L turbo-four. This new engine is also destined for duty in the next-generation CX-9 in 2016 or 2017. Speaking of which, a subcompact CX-3 is also on the way, though a time frame wasn’t supplied.
All in all, things are definitely heating up for Mazda–we can’t also forget the arrival of the new Miata MX-5 in just a week.
