The new transmission will be one of the first to be built cooperatively by General Motors and Ford and could see duty as early as 2015. While it’s not uncommon to see six, seven, and even eight-speed auto cog swappers, nine-speeds from ZF are just starting to be introduced and Ford and GM are most likely to be one of the first to use 10-speeds. Any more and they’ll have more than a semi-trailer cab.
The 10-speed could be a replacement for the brand’s current six-speed auto and could even get equipped to the new 2015 Ford F150 pickups with the turbodiesel light-duty models.
