Report: Mercedes-Benz preparing a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed auto for S500 Coupe

Mercedes-Benz enthusiast media reports that the Silver Arrow automaker is preparing a new in-house nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic for the 2015 S500 Coupe, specifically only for the rear-wheel drive model.

According to the report, a launch in January 2015 is expected and will only be offered on the S-Class Coupe for now, which will help deliver the 4.7L twin-turbocharged 450hp V8’s 516 lb-ft of twist to the rear wheels.

The new auto cog swapper is described to be lighter than the outgoing 7G-TRONIC seven-speed swapper and is the same unit that debuted on the 2014 E350 BlueTEC. The tranny is also said to be capable of handling up to 737 lb-ft of torque. It can work with both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive layouts, as well as plug-in hybrid and full-hybrid models. So expect the 9G-TRONIC to show up on other models in the near future.

The 9G-TRONIC transmission is now also offered on the facelifted Mercedes-Benz CLS.
