Australian auto media down yonder, Drive, reports that Subaru may not continue its BRZ into a second generation because Toyota is focusing on its relationship with BMW.
Subaru’s BRZ exists because by contract, Toyota has a 20% stake in Subaru’s parent, Fuji Heavy Industries. As a result, because of Toyota’s recent plans with BMW, ties might be broken.
BMW and Toyota have been known to be working on a high-performance sports coupe that will sit above the GT 86 and Toyota’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, apparently said that their collaborations could extend to a second-generation GT 86.
The new GT 86 is rumored to sport a hybrid powertrain with an inline-four, replacing the car’s current boxer-four to increase power and decrease fuel consumption. Toyota’s recent supercapacitor technology might also be used, lifted and simplified from their Le Mans TS040 Hybrid racer.
