Report: 2015 Mazda MX-5 could make room for another rear-wheel drive model

Word via CarAdvice is that Mazda may be preparing another rear-wheel drive model in addition to the highly-anticipated and next-generation 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata and its Fiat/Abarth equivalent.

According to the report, the model’s new SKYACTIV-CHASSIS will provide a starting point for another model in the future to make the most out of the development costs, especially for a small brand like Mazda.

Of course, these are just rumors and while nothing official has been announced, Mazda’s representative, Seita Kanai, didn’t exactly deny these claims after CarAdvice did some prodding.

Either way, the MX-5’s SKYACTIV CHASSIS is expected to way more than 220lbs less than the outgoing model.
