Report: Lexus IS250 to get turbocharged four-banger

Some rumors have surfaced surrounding the current Lexus IS250, which according to MotorTrend, will be receiving a turbocharged four-banger in place of its naturally-aspirated and gutless 2.5L V6. According to the report, the IS250 will most likely receive the same turbocharged engine as the incoming NX200t, revealed at this year’s auto show in Beijing, recently.

The new 2.0L four is supposedly good for 238hp and 259 lb-ft of torque in the NX200t, which is a big increase over the aging 2.5L V6 that makes 204hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. That V6 needs to motivate more than 3,400lbs of Lexus IS and thus, the power ratings of the four-cylinder seem far more practical and better in every sense. As a comparison, BMW’s 2.0L TwinPower turbo four produces 240hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.

MotorTrend also postulates the possibility that Lexus will change their nomenclature accordingly, to IS200t to match the engine’s displacement and its use of a turbocharger, like the NX200t. Hey, at least they’re staying true to the proper rules of model nomenclature, unlike the Germans….
