Report: Volkswagen of America’s CEO Michael Horn confirms next-gen Phaeton for United States

A new report is in from Bloomberg, who reports that Volkswagen Group of America’s CEO, Michael Horn, got on the horn to say the Phaeton will be making a triumphant return to the US.

“We plan to bring it back somewhere [in] 2018, 2019,” commented Horn on the issue.

It will apparently ride on Volkswagen’s next generation MLB Evo platform and will offer a range of six- and eight-cylinder engines. There was no mention of the return of the W12. But according to other Volkswagen sources from previous reports, the new Phaeton will be “class-leading” and “very smooth and luxurious.” While the last generation Phaeton was far from class-leading, it was still a “very smooth and luxurious” full-size executive sedan that was brilliantly over-engineered and quite masterful, being designed under Volkswagen’s previous reign from Ferdinand Piech.

In the same breathe, Horn also said that it is still unlikely that the Amarok pickup will be seen in the US and the current model is “too small” and expensive. Should Volkswagen decide to step into the pickup market, Horn said they would “need to do something different.”
