Report: Maserati Levante SUV will not be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee

Though it could make sense monetarily, Fiat subsidiaries Jeep and Maserati will stay apart at least for a bit longer. Initial reports suggested that the Maserati Levante SUV would be based off the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it would appear that it will be based off the Ghibli’s platform.

In an interview with, Harald Wester, CEO of Maserati, suggested this, though recent inquiries to the company have yielded conflicting messages. As Maserati is developing a 4 wheel drive system of their own, this move may make sense, so that all of their vehicles sharing the same chassis can easily be adapted for the system. Currently, the marque does not offer the all wheel drive system with their V8 models, so it will be interesting to see if the system will be refined to accommodate the additional power or if the Levante will only be offered with a high output V6.
