Report: Toyota working on a turbo four-door hybrid variant to GT 86 coupe

The future of Toyota’s and Subaru’s joint sports car, the GT 86, is up in the future as Toyota’s end of the project seem to be very indecisive as to what to do with expanding the lineup.

Hints of a convertible, hybrid, and even EV version have been tossed out there. Though the most likely candidate seems to be a new four-door variant, which will ride on an enlarged wheelbase of the GT 86.

Though because the car will grow in size, more power will be needed as “sources” within Toyota told Motoring.com of Australia that the current 2.0L naturally-aspirated four-banger is inadequate for the larger car. The solution: a turbocharged variant, though one that’s mated to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. All-wheel drive could also be an option.

Toyota will apparently be readying the new sedan by late 2016 and further options of expansion will be considered then.
