Report: Next generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evo to be powered by two-electric motors and diesel hybrid

Some new reports are in surrounding the supposed successor to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, which has been up in the air for quite some time as Mitsubishi juggles around possibilities.

Now, word from MotorTrend is that the next-generation Lancer Evolution could get plug-in hybrid technology. After speaking with supposed sources, the new Evo will be built on the same platform as the Renault Megane. This is after Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi announced their alliance to jointly develop and produce automobiles.

Details are obviously sparse, but the internal-combustion portion of the Lancer Evo successor has been speculated to be a 1.1L diesel three-banger, which was showcased on the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV Concept.

Either way, this is a hugely bold move for the Lancer Evolution since it has a huge cult following amongst the performance and tuner enthusiast. Let’s also not forget the Lancer Evo’s integral role in motorsports, mainly as the direct competitor to the Subaru WRX STi. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
