2013 Tokyo: Mitsubishi showcases the XR-PHEV Concept, another hybridized crossover pitch w/ video

Mitsubishi’s biggest contribution to the US auto market is not one of their sedans, but the Outlander compact SUV; that car is to be retired in not too long and Mitsubishi is throwing out hints at what the next equivalent may be like with the XR-PHEV concept.

Lots of chrome and LED headlights akin to those found on a Range Rover Evoque grace the front while under the hood, there’s a 1.1 liter 134 bhp three cylinder gas engine mated to a 160 bhp electric motor, which manages 66mpg on the Japanese testing cycle. The car is a plug-in hybrid and offers a range of 52 miles in electric only mode.

It is likely that a combination of a powertrain like the one found in this concept car will make its way to the next Outlander along with a gas engine. and most likely, less shocking blind spots.
