Report: Volkswagen is working on a Ducati-powered sports version of the XL1

Germany’s Bild.de has learned that Volkswagen is preparing a sportier version of Volkswagen’s super efficient XL1 hybrid sports coupe. And although the XL1 was designed specifically to be lightweight and aerodynamic, all in the name of fuel economy, such characteristics significantly benefit performance as well.

And to take advantage of these perks with the XL1, Volkswagen is apparently readying a Ducati-powered XL1, according to the report. To be supposedly called the XL Sports, the new model will drop the ZL1’s two-cylinder turbodiesel and electric motor for a more powerful 2.0L 190hp V-twin from the Ducatti 1199 Panigale.

Though no official word has been released, Bild’s report is based off of a conference showing for a group of students at the Vienna University of Technology with Volkswagen’s Ferdinand Piech.
