Report: BMW’s front-wheel driven 1-Series due in 2017

In a sort of follow up to the already pretty established rumors, BMW is said to be moving forward with a front-wheel driven 1-Series compact luxury model to compete against the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. The new entry level model will be a sedan and will be the first ever front-wheel drive BMW.

Underpinning the new BMW 1-Series is the automaker’s new joint modular architecture dubbed the UKL chassis, which will be used for future Mini models as well.

The next generation 1-Series sedan with front-wheel drive is will arrive sometime in 2017. Engine options will range from transverse-mounted three- and four-bangers, complete with direct-injection, as well as a range of diesel units, with a mix of plug-in hybrid powertrains.
