Report: BMW’s i8 due in Frankfurt to be first volume-produced car to use Gorilla Glass

The BMW i8 is really setting up to be a major game changer for not only the industry, but the brand as well. It’s a representation of BMW’s changeover to more sustainable technology and reducing fuel economy and carbon emissions.

BMW is going to such far lengths that AutoEvolution reports the new i8 will be the first volume-produced automobile to use Gorilla glass for some of the sports car’s windows, just to name one of the i8’s innovations.

The chemically treated glass will be used mainly to separate the passenger cell from the engine bay, as well as providing an engine cover.

Gorilla Glass has been described to offer great acoustic properties and weight savings of up to 50%–something necessary to keep this car in line with BMW’s new efficient trajectory.

The BMW i8 is set to debut in production form at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
