Report: Hyundai has a BMW 3-Series fighter in the works, might be due in 2016

Things have been going quite well for Hyundai. So well in fact, rumors have suggested the South Korean automaker is even in the works to produce a new compact luxury sports sedan to compete against the proverbial BMW 3-Series. And to follow up with that rumor, AutomotiveNews reportedly learned the rumors hold to be true.

While the Genesis and Sonata sedans are due for some updates, the more important bit of news revolves around this anticipated 3-Series rival. Said to be highly influenced by the HCD-14 Concept, which took a bow at this year’s 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January, the new sedan will be larger than the 3-Series, while also taking inspiration from the future Genesis coupe.

An expected arrival is predicted sometime in 2016, though timing is vague at best. Powertrains are speculated to be either a 2.0L turbocharged four-banger, or an updated version of Hyundai’s 3.3L V6.
