Report: The Toyota GT86 Convertible project is not axed, but still being decided upon

Not too long ago, AutomotiveNews reported that Toyota axed any thoughts of GT86 variants for their compact sports coupe. However, a new development has apparently come through, which suggests that the GT86 convertible is still on the table for consideration.

CarAdvice in Australia reportedly spoke with the man in charge of both the GT86 project and the much-anticipated Supra revival, Tetsuya Tada, and he denied the reports about the GT86 convertible being cancelled.

What’s keeping the GT86 convertible in limbo is Toyota’s decision as to whether the car can be made into a viable business case. In other words, will it be profitable for the brand. But another tug on the decision is the fact that Toyota is seriously struggling to keep up with the worldly demand for the coupe version. So adding a convertible into the mix can potentially put a serious strain on Toyota’s resources.
