Report: Land Rover gives the Range Rover Evoque Cabrio a green light for production

Following a report suggesting that Land Rover was on the verge of giving their Range Rover Evoque Cabrio a shot at hitting production status, word is from WhatCar? that Land Rover has approved the project. Yup, the world is getting a Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet-flop except from Land Rover.

The Evoque convertible will begin production in 2014, which we got a glimpse of at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012 in the form of a concept and early reports were suggesting any hopes of production were slim to none.

But in an interesting turn around, a “company source” has apparently told WhatCar? “The Evoque convertible now has the green light, it’s going to be built.”

The production version will be available in three-door form only and will sport a fabric roof rather than a far heavier and more complicated retractable hardtop. LR engineers also commented that the Evoque’s chassis is stiff enough to not require any structural changes to compensate for the nonexistent fixed roof.

The same choice of gasoline and diesel engines as the standard Evoque are said to be on offer along with the choice of two- or four-wheel drive.

No word on a US bound version as of yet.
