Report: Next generation 2016 Porsche Panamera to share modular platform with next Bentley Continental family

Edmunds.com reports that the next-generation Porsche Panamera, due in 2016, will share its platform with the next generation of Bentley Continentals. Both models are said to be based off of a new special version of Volkswagen AG’s front-engine, rear-wheel drive MSB modular architecture.

According to some insiders within Porsche, this platform sharing decision was made to help perpetuate the sporty bias with both the Porsche’s and Bentley’s driving dynamics, by using a platform with an engine placement closer towards the body’s center of gravity. Audi’s variants on the other hand, which underpins examples such as the A8, have their engine closer to the front-axle, following Audi’s tradition of producing front-wheel drive-based luxury automobiles.

The new platform will utilize a mix of aluminum and high-strength steels. That said, Porsche’s not expecting a major decrease in weight when compared to the current car. Though dynamics are said to benefit from the new platform as it focuses on lowering the center of gravity. The only exception however is a decrease in the weight of the hybrid model, which could lose nearly 15% of its current weight of 4,609, bringing the figure to 3,982.

Internally, Porsche also said that their models will begin to share more electronic components and sub-systems with other Volkswagen models to help Germany’s Prancing Horse with research and development. This of course is to also cut down production costs while maximizing profits.

As for the Porsche Panamera, the next generation is said to utilize a similar selection of powertrains as found with the current Panamera, which means the usual mix of gasoline and diesel V6s, V8s, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Additionally, instead of using Audi’s latest supercharged 3.0L V6, Porsche will concoct their own turbocharged V6 in-house.
