Report: More details on next-gen Ford Mustang pop up, Shelby to still be featured as “GT350”
As we wind down to the launch of the all-new next-generation 2015 Ford Mustang, we of course can expect a slew of information to be flowing through the rumormill, and that’s exactly what happened with Road&Track’s latest report.
Previously, R&T reported that Ford may be dropping the Shelby moniker to make way for the revival of the SVT Cobra name. Now, according to Ford Mustang enthusiast site, MustangsDaily via R&T, word is that the next SVT Mustang model will actually retain the Shelby name, in the form of the GT350. But that’s not all as a “Mach 1” version is also rumored for the new generation.
Referring to the GT350 however, rumor has it that the said new GT350 will utilize a high-revving V8 that’s based off of the current 5.0L Coyote. It’ll don a higher displacement and more power than the current “5.0” GT’s 450hp rating. But don’t expect it to get too close to the GT500’s supercharged 5.8L 662hp V8.
The GT350 is also described to be a “more stripped down” version of the base Mustang, but interestingly, it will retain all of the amenities expected in the range topper. Sources also said that we should expect more use of carbon fiber to help decrease weight.
A launch date for the new 2015 Mustang is expected to take place next year, at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, allowing the Mustang to celebrate its 50th year in existence. No confirmation or details were discovered surrounding the Mach 1 revival however.
