Amidst news that Acura has been shifting about the packaging options for its base ILX sedan, word is that the luxury automaker is seeking to compete in the compact luxury SUV segment against the likes of the BMW X1 and Buick Encore.

Due to the growing demand and popularity of compact CUVs, Acura is supposedly taking the segment very seriously after originally expressing interest in downsizing its crossover offerings. Acura already did so by axing the mid-sized ZDX crossover.

Additionally, Acura did hint at a compact crossover with the CUV concept it debuted at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. Not to mention, Acura increased the size of its previous compact crossover, the RDX, to help it move upmarket. That said, Acura is a bit shy in the compact crossover department and they’re apparently not willing to let this opportunity slip.

Isn’t the RDX already a compact CUV? And isn’t it selling very well?

They’re shifting the market placement of their SUV crossovers. The MDX moves closer to compete against the BMW X5/Mercedes ML etc, the RDX moves closer to competing against the X3/GLK, and this new rumored compact SUV may go head to head with the X1 and Buick Encore.
