Report: Audi cancels the R8 e-tron, the only 10 in existence will be used for testing

AutoCarUK reports that Audi is turning back on its plan to produce an all-electric version of their infamous R8 sports car, which was formally known as the R8 e-tron. The reason behind Audi’s decision mainly dealt with the cost of batteries. Audi was hoping that the price would go down, under the theory that over time, the price of such complex battery packs would have diminished.

Unfortunately, so is not the case and this has made the R8 e-tron “unviable for series production.”

“Through the R8 e-tron, Audi has acquired extensive expertise that will benefit its electrified production models,” Audi said in a press release.

The 10 or so Audi R8 e-trons in existence will instead be used for research, development and testing only.

As a refresher, the Audi R8 e-tron is capable of 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds and a range of 134 miles.
