Fiat reportedly interested in twin-turbo V8 diesel for Maserati Ghibli, V6 oil burner to test demand
Fiat has been planning some big things for the Maserati brand as the corporation’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, continues his global offensive on trying to make Fiat one of the most prominent automakers of the world. To exemplify this, CARandDRIVER reports that Fiat is developing a serious turbodiesel V6, which could potentially lead to an even more serious V8 turbodiesel engine, for the all-new Ghibli.

The Italian brand’s interest in V6 and V8 turbodiesel engines stems from the absence of them in Ghibli’s particular market as its direct competitors, BMW and Benz, have axed their big V8 diesels, apparently to cut costs. Uh oh…those aren’t the words us car enthusiasts like to hear. But due to the absence of the German eight-cylinder oil burners, Fiat supposedly sees an “overwhelming customer demand” for them, hence their decision to pursue.
Right now, Maserati is taking it slow and testing that supposed demand by starting off with a twin-turbo diesel V6 good for 275hp. Should it be well received, a 4.0L direct-injected diesel will follow not too shortly after. The predicted power output for the V8 should be around 360hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to Fiat’s newly patented Multijet clean-diesel systems, they say that 30 mpg is the target for the EPA cycles.
Time frame? CARandDRIVER predicts that 2016 should be the timeframe for the V8 turbodiesel.
