It is said to be based off of the CrossBlue Concept, which was showcased at this year’s Detroit Auto Show in January. Should it get a green light, it will be built in North America—either Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the Passat is built, or in Puebla, Mexico.
Right now however, Volkswagen’s board member for production, Michael Macht—who also used to formerly be CEO of Porsche—said that the production cost is a little too high at the moment to give it the full go.
“After the success of the U.S. version of the Passat,” VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said at a press conference, “the goal is to establish ourselves in another core segment.”
