Kia has officially announced some changes for its 2013 Optima Hybrid sedan. For the new model year, the 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid receives some tweaks to its powertrain for better power delivery.

The same basic equipment, which includes a 2.4L four-banger mated to a 47hp electric motor, for a total output of 199hp. The Kia Optima Hybrid prior to the update served up 206hp, however the major change for the minor decrease in horsepower was a significant increase of torque: 235 lb-ft of torque versus the previous model’s 195 lb-ft of torque.

The 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid also returns up to 36 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, for a combined cycle of 38 mpg—subtract one mpg per figure for the top trim level EX model.

Updated 2013 Optima Hybrid Powertrain Improves Performance and Efficiency

  • European-inspired midsize sedan offers style and substance with hybrid technology
  • Hybrid model now offers two separate trim levels and greater cargo space

IRVINE, Calif. Mar. 7, 2013 – Since its debut, the Optima midsize sedan has garnered awards and accolades for Kia Motors America (KMA) in recognition of its design, performance and value.  In 2011, the Optima Hybrid introduced a new level of efficiency to the brand’s most popular name plate.  Now, KMA is pleased to announce the arrival of its updated 2013 Optima Hybrid, featuring a more performance-driven and fuel-efficient powertrain as well as more cargo space and premium features.

For 2013, the Optima Hybrid features numerous powertrain refinements for smoothness and drivability, including a more robust 47 HP electric traction motor, a stronger Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) and a more powerful 47 kW Lithium Polymer battery.  Although the combined 199 horsepower rating is slightly lower than before, reduced from 206, the combined 235 lb-ft of torque is significantly higher, increased from 195 lb-ft, resulting in a more responsive and powerful Optima Hybrid.

The Optima Hybrid is now available in two trim levels, base and EX.  The base model achieves an EPA estimated 36 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined1, making the Optima Hybrid more efficient than its predecessor2.  The EX model delivers an EPA estimated 35/39/371.

In addition to increases in performance and efficiency, the 2013 Optima Hybrid also benefits from greater trunk space than before, thanks to the repackaging of the vehicle’s battery pack. Furthermore, the EX model adds navigation with back-up camera3, an 8-speaker Infinity audio system4, panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats and 17-inch wheels to the already long list of amenities.

The Optima Hybrid builds on the gasoline-powered Optima, offering improved aerodynamics and using lighter weight components. Lighter and more aerodynamic 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels, base and EX respectively, reduce weight and drag, while superbly integrating with the Optima’s stunning design.  Extensive use of aluminum instead of steel for the lower front and rear control arms, tie rod ends and rear knuckles helps offset the weight of the hybrid components.  Improved aerodynamics are gained via the Optima Hybrid’s lowered ride height, full belly pan and rear spoiler.  Other Optima Hybrid differentiators include satin finished front grille surround and trim on the lower front fascia and side sills, and unique front and rear lighting.  For 2013, the newly revised Kia name badge is applied to the hood, trunk lid, and steering wheel.

Advanced Safety Features
The 2013 Optima Hybrid is equipped with an impressive array of standard safety equipment. All trims come outfitted with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).  Traction Control System (TCS) and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also come standard on all models.

Industry-Leading Warranty
The 2013 Optima Hybrid is covered by Kia’s comprehensive warranty program5, which offers consumer protection at an exceptional value.  Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a 10-year/150,000 mile hybrid system warranty (excluding PA and WA), a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty.  A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the comprehensive vehicle coverage.
