TheDetroitFreePress reports that Jeep of North America has given the green light for a diesel engine for the Wrangler. This comes after the Grand Cherokee saw its first diesel introduction ever for the US at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

According to the report, Jeep’s head honcho Mike Manley told TheDetroitFreePress that demand for a Wrangler diesel is high: “Wrangler customers really want a diesel. It’s a target vehicle for a diesel once we see the reaction to the Grand Cherokee [diesel].”

No specifics were shared, however, some have speculated that the Wrangler could get a modified version of the European 2.8L inline-four good for 197hp and 339 lb-ft of torque.

Did I miss something? The Grand Cherokee had a diesel in 2008 sourced from MB during the shotgun marriage to Diamler.

I stand corrected again. Did not know the last generation diesel was offered here in America for a very short time.

I don’t know one Wrangler owner that wouldn’t want a diesel engine. The 2.8 CRD in the UK version would average 30-32 MPG combined here in the US. My ’09 averages 17. Even with a 10-15% premium on diesel prices, it would be a no brainer for many Jeep owners. Those that are true off roaders would want the diesel even more. Are monkeys running Jeep / Chrysler / Fiat? It wasn’t until the 2012 model that Jeep finally abandoned the 4 speed automatic transmission. Their current 5 speed and V6 gets 1-2 MPG better results than previous models. Seriously….? Maybe they think because they have such a loyal customer base that they can continue to turn out garbage and the customers will lap it up. If Chevy can put a diesel in a Cruze, why can’t Jeep bring the diesel Wrangler to the States?

This is going to lead to the same outcome as before. They’re going to sight low market interest in the diesel Grand Cherokee as a reason not to put in the money to bring the diesel Wrangler to the US. For a company that seems to understand a lot of what their clients want, they do not seem to understand the differences between their clients. The type of person that wants a Grand Cherokee is not the same type of person that wants a Wrangler. I say that being a long time Cherokee & Grand Cherokee owner who desperately wants a 4-door Wrangler. I’ve always wanted a Wrangler but needed the towing capacity and cargo space of *Cherokee. When I bought my WJ the 4 door JKs had just come out and cost too much for me at the time. My good ol’ WJ is still running great but the odometer is getting up there and I am getting the itch to trade it in. If a diesel Wrangler doesn’t happen fast it will traded in for a 4-door truck rather than a 4-door Wrangler. Please Jeep, don’t let this happen. #MikeManleyReadThis

now take said diesel, and cut off 3 feet of length and 6 inches of width from the 2d wrangler and I’d love one.
