Built on the new modular architecture designed by BMW, the new M235i is built on the designated F2x platform, the ‘x’ being a pending number. So in essence, the M235i is the successor to the last built M135i coupe. Additionally, the destined 2-Series to be is supposed to be the overall successor to the current rear-wheel drive 1-Series coupe and convertible while the future next-gen 1-Series turns front-wheel drive to compete against the likes of Audi’s and Mercedes-Benz’s compact offerings.

The new 2-Series is expected to launch sometime in 2014 both in coupe and convertible form. So far, rear-wheel drive seems to be the only option. Though many others have already speculated that xDrive all-wheel drive will be optional.
