For the past four days, I’ve been privileged to travel with a group of 11 bloggers and journalists in an event hosted by Mercedes-Benz called ‘Guarding the new E-Class.’ The trip started in Carlsbad, California and makes its way to Detroit via the famous Route 66 with stops in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois.
We will be arriving in Detroit on Sunday Jan. 13 – just in time for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and the public auto show launch of the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. So far, the trip has been quite amazing with a great group of individuals from all over Europe including German, Spain, Italy and France. It’s a clash of cultures out on a massive road-trip in the United States – a perfect recipe for a great week (make sure you check out their names and links to their sites below).
The new E-Class lineup is the highlight of Mercedes’ presence at this year’s Detroit Auto Show and I have to say – the new lineup is not just a facelift in my eyes but a well-done and much-needed overhaul to keep up with competitors like the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series. Has Mercedes-Benz nailed it? I definitely think so – and no I’m not just saying that because they are hosting me. Why?
The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the company itself is leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors when it comes to innovative technology. Mercedes-Benz says that a total of 11 new or optimized assistance systems from the future S-Class will debut on the new E-Class sedan and wagon models. This includes such thing as full Apple iPhone Siri integration, Intelligent Drive (a mixture of PRE-SAFE and DISTRONIC PLUS), Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and ATTENTION ASSIST (read more about the tech here).
Looks wise, the 2014 E-Class definitely impresses. One of the most important updates is the new front end design that gets rid of the dual headlights on each side in favor of a single unit with beautifully design LEDs that keep the heritage of the E-Class alive.
Power for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes from a choice of four powertrains. The Mercedes-Benz E250 BluTEC is powered by a 2.1 liter 4-cylinder diesel engine making 190-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The 2014 Mercedes E350, and E350 4MATIC Wagon are powered by a 3.5 liter V6 making 302-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The E400 HYBRID Sedan is powered by electric motor making 27-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque mated to the 3.5 liter gasoline engine. The top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz E550 4MATIC Sport Sedan is powered by a 5.5 liter turbocharged V8 making 402 hp and 443 lb.-ft.
