Marchionne offering Volkswagen owners $1,000 rebate for a Chrysler or Fiat

The German automotive industry doesn’t seem to be a fan of Chrysler Group and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne who is also head of Europe’s main carmaking lobby group (he was recently re-elected on Friday). Why do they dislike Marchionne?

Well, to briefly touch on the story, Marchionne has been in a war of words with Volkswagen over auto pricing in Europe – where V-Dub owns 25 percent of the market – saying that the German company was creating a ‘bloodbath’ in the region. Volkswagen’s chief spokesman Stephan Gruehsem responded that Marchionne wasn’t qualified to lead the ACEA lobby group and should step down from his position.

It now seems that Marchionne is bringing the battle with Volkswagen across the Atlantic to the United States. The Italian CEO is offering U.S. Volkswagen owners a $1,000 rebate for a Chrysler or Fiat – and they don’t even have to give up their current V-Dub to qualify.

We’ll see how interesting this gets.
