BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept released before Detroit debut

In what you can call a surprise, a somewhat crazy move and a major marketing shift, BMW today released photos and details of its new 4 Series Coupe Concept that will replace the 3 Series Coupe in its lineup. Set to debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January, the 4 Series badge will drop the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible from BMW’s lineup and rebadge them with the number ‘4.’

So what’s up with the 4? According to BMW:

The ‘4’ doesn’t just mark the start of a new cycle, it represents the zenith of a development curve. BMW has given the new model its own individual character and a standalone design – and, in so doing, has turned ‘4’ into segment shorthand for aesthetic and dynamic appeal. The latest addition to a nomenclature that sees BMW building on the fine tradition of its large BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series Coupes, the ‘4’ stands for greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation from the BMW 3 Series range.

While this is just a concept, BMW is well known for keeping the actual production model design very similar to the concept (about 99% similar). The new 4 Series Coupe will sit on a wheelbase that is 50 millimeters longer than the current 3 Coupe, will be 44 mm wider and 16 mm lower.

It is also reported that the 4 Series lineup will include the upcoming BMW X4.
