2012 LA Preview: BMW i3 Coupe Concept is a two door city EV

It was rumored that BMW’s new ‘i’ brand had something special planned for the 2012 LA Auto Show – well, here it is. Making its online debut the day before the curtains open on the 2012 LA Auto Show is the new BMW i3 Concept Coupe.

“The state-of-the-art, clean-cut and open design showcased by the BMW i3 Concept Coupe represents a pioneering form of urban mobility that makes sustainability awareness an intrinsic part of the premium profile,” BMW said in a statement. “Beyond this, the three-door model employs the design idiom that has been created especially for the BMW i cars to convey an undeniable sense of dynamism and driving pleasure.”

Like the BMW i3 Concept, the coupe concept is powered by the same electric-motor setup. The system sits on the rear axle and produces 170-hp with a maximum torque of 184 lb-ft. That gives the BMW i3 Coupe Concept the ability to go from 0 to 37 mph in under 4 seconds and from 0 to 62 mph in less than 8 seconds. On a full charge, the BMW i3 Coupe Concept can travel a total range of 80 to 100 miles. The battery can be fully recharged in 6 hours from a standard power socket and can reach 80 percent charge in just one hour with a high-speed charger package.

The BMW i3 4-door model will hit markets next year and the coupe will follow shortly after.
