Automakers lost more than 15,000 new vehicles during Hurricane Sandy

Many automakers including Toyota, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda and Fisker have lost more than 15,000 new vehicles that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Nissan estimated a loss of 6,000 units of Nissan and Infiniti branded vehicles.

Including new and used automobiles, more than 200,000 light vehicles have to be replaced said Larry Dixon, senior analyst for the National Automobile Dealers Association.

“Total vehicles affected may be about one-third of what we saw with Hurricane Katrina, and that was about 600,000” used and new vehicles, said Dixon. “We don’t see replacement demand starting to accelerate until we’re into December.”

Fisker lost a total of 338 units of the Karma sedan plug-in hybrid that are priced at $103,000 each, said Roger Ormisher, a spokesman for the company.
