Report: Mazda sports car head confirms new RX-7 for 2017

New reports suggest that the next-generation Mazda RX-7 has been confirmed by the company’s sports car boss, Nobuhiro Yamamoto. The new Mazda RX-7 is scheduled to debut in 2017, which marks the 50 years of company’s first Wankel-powered vehicle, the 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S.

Power is expected to come from a naturally-aspirated 16X rotary engine, which hasn’t been installed in a production vehicle. The engine is a 1.6 liter engine making 300-hp.

Yamamoto says that the next-generation Mazda RX-7 will ‘definitely be lighter’ with the use of aluminum body panels. Design inspiration is likely to come from the Mazda Takeri Concept.

We look forward to 2017.
