Report: Volkswagen working on high-performance, lightweight ‘carbon GTI’

Word on the street is that Volkswagen is working on a very special, lightweight performance version of the next-generation GTI. Known as the ‘carbon Golf GTI’ the model will use carbon fiber and aluminum to drop around 440 pounds, compared with today’s GTI.

Insiders say that the model is being created to show V-dub’s use of lightweight material and to pay a tribute to the simplicity and agility of the original performance hatchback – which weighed in at only 1,785 pounds.

Power is expected to come from 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo engine making 222-hp with a 0 to 62 mph time of under 6 seconds.

Production will be very limited with a possible debut in 2014 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf.
