Report: Acura NSX will appear in GT races

In an interview with SpeedTV.com, Honda Performance Development Vice President Steve Erikson said that the new Acura NSX will be competing in GT races as soon as it appears in showrooms. The car is scheduled to hit dealers in late 2014 as a 2015 model year.

“Given that we’ve had some good success in offering sports cars in prototypes, I think we’ve got the capability to offer the NSX in some point in the future that customers can buy and race,” Erikson told Speed.

Due to its hybrid attributes, it is not clear yet as in which specific series the new Acura NSX sports car will race, but a likely venue includes Grand AM GX for non-traditional or experimental models, which is to be launched next season.

Refresher: Power for the Honda and Acura NSX will come from 2 Electric Motor Drive Units with a bilateral torque adjustable control system. The new hybrid all-wheel-drive system can generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering, which Honda says will deliver handling performance unmatched by previous AWD systems. In addition to the handling benefits of the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system, a next-generation VTEC V6 engine with direct-injection, works together with a dual clutch transmission and a third electric traction motor integrated within the transmission. No official figures have been provided as of yet. Sales begin in 2014.
