Gulf/Mirage Ford GT40 sells for $11 million at 2012 Pebble Beach

At the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, RM auctioneers got rid of a GT40 for a handsome amount. While the ultra-rare Ford GT40 is already able to go for a high number, this special GT40 is 1967 Gulf/Mirage Ford GT40 that was used by Steve McQueen.

The model is one of the only two surviving lightweight Ford GT40 units that is powered by a 440-hp V8 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Adding to the value of the car is the fact that the Gulf/Mirage Ford GT40 landed a role in the 1971 Steve McQueen film ‘Le Mans.’

RM estimated the car to reach upwards of $8 million but two bidders ended up bumping the price to a final of $11 million. The $11 million price rag now holds the record for most expensive American car ever sold.
