Reports coming out of the UK suggest that Kia is looking to create a new model that will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The model would be a production version of the GT Concept that made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

“Every company needs a halo car,” Kia’s head of design Peter Schreyer told AutoExpress. “The coupe market is dominated by German brands, and the GT is Kia’s first step – it’s like putting a foot in the door of the club. This car is aimed at a niche that Kia could fill. It could find a lot of customers.”

The Kia GT Concept was powered by a 390-hp 3.3 liter turbocharged V6, however, a more modest engine range is being considered for the production model.

An insider says that we won’t see anything until 2016.
